The year was 1967, the Summer of Love. Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Doors - Light My Fire and so many others. I was 14. Just moved back to Brooklyn, settling into a new home. Starting high school in a month. Walking the neighborhood and introducing myself to the stores, the streets, and the buses moving endlessly back and forth in the heat.
It was a time of reflection, a time of loss, a world in change, and yet no one thing laid claim to being the reason it was all different. It should have been a sad time, and time to worry about the world - if it was going to be okay.
But summer has a way of gathering everyone together and letting them know, it’ll be fine. Just give it a chance.
And for eight straight weeks, Groovin by the Young Rascals was the song that delivered that message.
That coaxed people away from the stress and out into the streets. To play, dance, and gather around good food and sing.
To think about love and its power to heal.
AM radio was still king of the airwaves and this song played every few hours; a lyrical reminder to listen and not worry so much because -- Groovin' on a Sunday afternoon was what everyone should be doing.
Was a way to transport all of us back in time, to a moment in our lives that was peaceful and filled with love and hope and a summer that still had days left to enjoy.
So, for eight weeks I let everything else pass through. Let the hurt drift. The fear fall away and knew that good times would be had at some point, I just had to keep believing. I did.
