Summer Solstice

The mystery of Stonehenge

By Oliver MillwardPublished 3 days ago 4 min read

In the medieval town of Salisbury, a revival of an ancient solstice ritual has unveiled an unexpected power. As the townspeople gathered around the daunting pillars of Stonehenge, a palpable energy coursed through the air; the ancient stones hummed with a low, resonant vibration. Amidst the gathering, a young girl named Lucy stood with her parents, discerning a strange sense of belonging she couldn't quite explain. She had persuaded her parents to take her to Stonehenge for the summer solstice as it was the only time the rocks could be touched.

As the ritual commenced, led by the town's historian who chanted in an ancient tongue, the first rays of the solstice sun pierced through the stones, illuminating the circle in a golden halo. Lucy felt a sudden rush of fervour envelop her soul. Lucy's vision blurred as she was transported to a vivid scene from centuries past. She saw robed figures conducting the same ritual, their faces serene and purposeful.

The vision faded as quickly as it had come, leaving Lucy breathless and disoriented. She looked around to see if anyone else had experienced something similar, but everyone else seemed oblivious. Confused yet intrigued, Lucy, with a courage that belied her years, confided in her grandmother, an eccentric woman with a penchant for ancient folklore. Her grandmother's eyes widened in recognition and fear, but Lucy's courage remained steadfast.

"Lucy, my dear," she whispered, "you have the gift. Our family descends from the ancient Druids who built this place. The power of the solstice has chosen you."

The stones pulled Lucy through her visions, each revealing fragments of Druidic wisdom and previously concealed truths about the land. With each visit, she felt a deeper connection to her ancestors and the mystical energy of Stonehenge. She could not elude the warm glow that shone through the boulders, illuminating her soul and demanding exploration, nor did she want to.

Word of Lucy's visions somehow spread through the town, as often is the case, drawing the attention of a local historian named Dr. Michael Harris. Sceptical yet curious, Dr Harris approached Lucy, offering assistance deciphering the ancient transmissions she was receiving. Together, they pored over old manuscripts and Druidic texts, piecing a prophecy of a guardian protecting the sacred site in times of great peril.

As Lucy's connection to the solstice energy grew stronger, she sensed a looming threat. A powerful corporation, deceitfully disguised as an archaeological research group, had set its sights on Stonehenge, planning to exploit its mystical energy for profit. Lucy's visions revealed their true intentions and the catastrophic consequences if they succeeded, leaving a bitter taste of betrayal in the air.

Determined to protect her heritage and the sacred site, Lucy rallied the townspeople. With Dr. Harris and her grandmother by her side, she led a campaign to preserve Stonehenge, invoking the ancient rituals and the power of the solstice. The townspeople, inspired by Lucy's courage and the deep connection to their ancestors, united in a decisive stand against the corporation, forming a strong and united community.

On the eve of the next solstice, the corporation made its move as the town prepared for another ritual. But Lucy, now fully embracing her role as the guardian, stood at the heart of Stonehenge, her presence a beacon of ancient power. As the sun rose, the energy of the stones surged through her, creating a protective barrier around the site. The townspeople joined hands, chanting in unison, their voices echoing the ancient Druids.

At that moment, the true power of the solstice was revealed—the beam emanating from Stonehenge burnt into the avaricious suits and ties who were ready to pounce for profit. It did not require an explanation. One side was welcome, and the other was not. Those who ignore the past are destined to repeat their failures.

The corporation's plans were thwarted, and Stonehenge's mystical energy was preserved. Lucy felt a peculiar sensation as she stood victorious; the air shimmered around her, creating an aura of gratitude. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the light—a mirror image of Lucy herself, but older and more ethereal. Only Lucy could view her apparent guardian.

"You have done well," the apparition said, her voice echoing with otherworldly wisdom. "But this is only the beginning. You have unlocked the power of the solstice, but now you must face its true worth."

Before Lucy could respond, the figure touched her hand, a torrent of memories and visions flooded her mind. She saw herself not as a young girl but as an ancient Druid priestess, reborn in each generation to protect Stonehenge. The solstice power was a cycle, binding her soul to the land, forever repeating the same battle against those who sought to control it.

Lucy realized with a jolt that her life was part of an eternal loop, each victory temporary, each generation a new challenge. The unexpected power of the solstice was not just the energy of the stones but the binding of her spirit to their fate, a guardian destined to rise and fall with the sun's eternal dance. As the vision faded, Lucy knew she was part of something far more immense and inexorable than she had ever imagined. The weight of her destiny settled upon her, and with a resolute heart, she prepared for the battles yet to come.
