It feels like I've been here always, but it's so lovely I cant mind. Sometimes things are confused and disjointed, like in a dream. But a good dream.
I squint at the passenger mirror. I can't see my reflection because the last of the sunlight is bouncing off into my eyes. I love it though. Such a balmy evening. The wind pouring off the ocean feels wonderful on my skin. Look how tanned and slender my arm is!
Thinking of it, we've been bathed in the last of the sunlight for a lot longer than a sunset usually lasts. It could've been hours, or days. What an absurd thought! The urge to laugh has me in a soft but irresistible grip. I give in to it, languid. My mouth stretches, and my facial muscles ache with joy. I wonder if I'm high. Did I take something? I don't remember taking anything.
Never mind the sunset, I can't remember how long I've been on the road with you. It's all fuzzy. There's music I love winding in and out, like this road meandering along the coast. Everything is fresh and beautiful and I'm perfectly content.
The music is louder. My whole world is this golden sigh of a moment. The sun beams ever more brightly making it hard to see you... but that's OK, too. Your outline, fuzzy and shining like that, makes you almost an angel. My angel. Anyway, your hand on mine is enough. My heart swells.
I gaze out the window. Has the sun dipped a smidge lower? The colours are richer and lovelier. Eventually, it must get dark. 'Til then, I have these treacly moments slipping by in this honey-glazed world. With you. I don't wish to be anywhere else. I'm utterly surrounded by love, like there are angels close, all around me, just beyond sight. Hiding behind those sunbeams. The next moment, I'm certain of it. They're as real as you are. How lovely!
Are you ready?
Yes. I think so. Can she hear us, do you think?
It's very possible. At the very least, I'm sure she knows on some level that you're here.
Bye, Mum. We love you.
