In the summer of 1990, Hap, a 10-year-old Daur teenager, lost his last relative in the family, his father. For him, this was the saddest time of his life. In order to make a living, he had to follow his father's advice before his death, and came to a small town called Wuma River from Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province, to join his uncle and aunt. His uncle lives on the edge of the town and works in a sawmill.

When he first arrived, Happ was curious about everything around him. He noticed that both his uncle and father were big, rough-skinned, trustworthy-looking people; but they also had a completely different side: the uncle was extremely decisive, he was practical, and he never wasted anything of value. things, but never keep what he thinks should be thrown away. This makes Happ miss his affectionate father even more.

The uncle contacted Happ to go to a school with a good quality of education but far from town. Happ walked around the riverside trail for about 20 minutes every day to and from school. At this time, the big black dog of the uncle's family, who was almost too old to tell his age, broke into the life of the 10-year-old. The dog, Amber, was blind in one eye and a little lame on his left hind leg. Maybe too old, his fat body wrapped in black fur, slow to move, but his still bright amber one eye was always affectionate.

Happ felt that his uncle was already despising the old amber, and he didn't even let his aunt feed it enough food. And Amber never barks or is restless because the type and quantity of food given by the owner is too small. Out of the instinct to survive, it always tries to find something else to eat on its own. Maybe it has guessed the owner's mind, for fear of being abandoned? Thinking of this, Happ felt a helpless sadness in his heart. He would quietly leave a steamed bun or tortilla to eat on the way to school. With such a pitiful person, Amber faithfully followed Happ far behind every morning; and when he came home from school in the afternoon, he always squatted at the intersection and waited.

When not in class, Harp often took Amber to play in the bushes by the river. He gave it orders loudly, and Amber wagged his tail vigorously to show his understanding. Its amber one-eyed is alert and flexible, flashing with intelligent obedience. However, Amber was obviously powerless, and its movements were so slow that even an old rabbit couldn't catch up.

"You must be tired, right?" At such times, Harp always patted it on the head understandably and took it to the grass on the shore. Harp lay down, and Amber lay beside him. So, they began an intimate conversation between only the two of them. Harp felt that this was a true friend, and he poured out some inconvenient things to tell his uncle and aunt to Amber, and Amber's one eye showed a knowing look...

Autumn and winter came, and in the blink of an eye, the town of Wuma River seemed to be frozen by the cold, bare and hard everywhere. The clear river water in the past has also turned into a smooth ice surface that has plunged thousands of miles, attracting groups of children to come and skate noisily.

One day during the winter vacation, Happ and a few children chased each other on the ice and had a great time. Amber also barked and jumped with them, sharing the joy of being with the children to the fullest. They all forgot time, forgot space, and were completely intoxicated with infinite joy...

They finally felt tired, so they sat on the ice to rest together. Amber, who was jumping on the side, also stopped and leaned against the children...

The weight and heat of several children and a dog were concentrated together, pressing and warming the ice. After a while, the ice layer finally broke unbearably, and a terrible thing happened. Out of instinct, Amber reacted quickly, jumped up, and ran to the shore, while the children were frightened by the sudden break of the ice layer, and all fell into the icy river water.

The water was full of chunks of crushed ice. Several children struggled to get out of the water, hugged the ice floes, and climbed up with all their strength. After hard work, only one child who didn't understand water at all was still screaming for help, and Happ and the rest of the drowning people finally climbed onto the ice.

The only remaining child clung to a large piece of broken ice, and from time to time called for his companions to save him. The children who had escaped reached out and tried to catch him, but the farther he slid, the more they could not touch him. Happ jumped into the water again and swam towards his companions.

Happ pushed the child to a place within the reach of his companions, and then held him up with all his might... The child was saved, but Happ sank into the water due to excessive cold and lack of energy.

Amber, who had been stunned on the shore, was stunned by this scene, until he heard the children on the ice calling Happ's name loudly, and suddenly woke up and barked. I saw it jump up, jump into the ice water, and soon rushed to Happ, who was floating up and down in the water, opened its mouth, clenched his collar with its teeth, and struggled to drag him towards his companions. When the companions dragged Happ onto the ice and dragged him to the shore, they found that Amber was not following. Happ, whose lips were blue and trembling, staggered to the ice cave, but could not see Amber's familiar figure.

This is the first and last time in its life to show people its superb water rescue skills. This old black dog willingly gave his life for his friend.
