Renegade Rebeka

A Story

Rebeka was a rebel with a cause. She stood up for what she believed in and didn’t care how popular it made her. It didn’t matter how many times her Pa had beat her; Rebeka wouldn’t change her mind. She was going to continue doing as she’d been doing.

Rebeka believed all men were created equal and had the right to freedom. She didn’t think that any man, white or black, had the right to enslave people. Her heart went out to the ones born into slavery, and she looked for any way she could to free them.

She’d saved many with her own money by buying them and sending them to a school in the North to receive an education. For others that she could not buy, she would find a way to kidnap them and smuggle them to Harriet and the Underground Railroad so that they could be taken up North to freedom. All in all, she had saved at least seventy children from the clutches of slavery.

No one could stop her from using her own money to buy the slave children. It was hers by right of inheritance. Her grandmother had left her everything she owned, and Rebeka was slowly selling it all off, knowing she would approve.

Many tried to stop her once they found out what she was up to, but when Rebeka set her mind to something, nothing would change it. She knew what she was doing was right by God. She just wished she didn’t have to do it.

So Rebeka continued fighting for others' freedom the only way she could, building a reputation among her people as a rule breaker, and not caring what others thought of her, just caring that she was doing the right thing.

You wrote about me and named her Rebeka! If only I had the money that she has, I'd do the same thing! Apart from the money, everything else about Rebeka is the same as me! I loved your story so much!

  • Watchya gonna do? She's not breaking the law, lol. I love it. (Though I know there were & always have been plenty of forces that wouldn't have let that stop them.) My dad always used to object when I did something risky for a good cause, "God didn't put that space up there just to hold your ears apart." He's an adamant Trump supporter. He doesn't get the irony.
