Thirty years of loyalty and devotion had kept us apart, had split us down the middle like the spine of an open book. Pages unturned. Chapters unread. His love, ever protective, sheltering me behind the bulwark of his violence.
Thirty years of separation and severance spurred by a blind notion of uncompromising justice. His life, forever stalled, caged by the consequences of a defending rage.
Thirty years of visits and expectancy divided by the thin plexiglass of punishment. His last call to me, full of hope.
“I’m coming home, my love. I’ve been released.”
