The din of the bustling tavern could be heard well before it came into view, the cacophony of noises blended into quiet roar of activity. Kÿara glanced over at her companions as they approached; Kiira, to her left standing nearly a head taller than she, wore his nearly ever-present smile and appeared ready to find a place to put up his feet. The mountainous Aklor to her right, exhaling frosty plumes of breath nearly as big as she, made even Kiira seem scrawny. The door of the inn swung open as the tavern’s peacekeeper tossed a patron who had clearly been in a scuffle out into the street, then another unconscious body out atop the first, scowling as he turned to resume his post. The notes of a bawdy tune rose briefly above the rest of the commotion, a surprisingly melodic voice accompanied by a slightly less well-tuned lyre reaching them before disappearing once more beneath the tumult.

Aklor charged ahead, eagerly disappearing into the chaos. Kÿara looked up to the sky and noticed large, fluffy flakes of snow beginning to drift down and heard Kiira utter a pensive sigh. Peering to her left she could see he’d stopped walking, his gaze fixed upward. She waited a moment before prompting, “you coming?” She waited several moments and had nearly given up on getting a reply when he muttered, “Did I do the right thing?”

“You did what you felt you had to,” she shrugged.

“Is that the same thing, though?”

About the Creator

Chris Walker

Fantasy/science fiction is my bread and butter, and I have been an avid reader of the genre for as long as I can remember. Inspired by the likes of R.A. Salavatore, Weiss/Hickman, and others, I think of my work as an homage to their legacy.
