Duke Mu of Qin made Duke Yiwu the ruler of the state [that is, Duke Hui of Jin], but he did not get any benefit himself but suffered from his anger instead. Later, after listening to his wife Mu Ji's advice, he allowed Yiwu to make peace, and Yiwu sent Duke Gao to Qin as collateral. The Duke of Qin treated him well and married his daughter Huai Ying to him. In 638 B.C., Gongzi Nian heard that his father was sick and feared that the throne would be passed to someone else, so he secretly ran back. When Yiwu died the next year, Duke Gao became the king of the state and did not deal with Qin. The Duke of Qin regretted that he had made the wrong decision to appoint Yiwu. Now that Yiwu was dead, Duke Gao was another Yiwu. Therefore, he decided to make Duke Changer the ruler of the state and brought him from Chu.

Both Duke Mu of Qin and Mu Ji respected Duke Chong Er. They wanted to make kinship with him and wanted to marry their daughter Huai Ying to him instead. Huai Ying said, "If I marry Duke Gongshi, can I marry his uncle again?" Mu Ji said, "Why not? Duke Chong Er is a good man, if we become his relative, both sides will benefit." Huai Ying thought, "Although it is good for both countries to marry an old man, it is good for both countries. So she nodded her head and approved. Duke Mu of Qin asked Gongsun Zhi to make a match. Zhao Wei and Xu Yan, who were eager to make friends with Qin, persuaded Duke Chong Er to agree to the marriage. In those days, there were plenty of fathers who married their sons and sons who married their stepmother, not to mention uncles who married their nephews. So, the old man Chong Er became a groom again. While everyone was there eating the wedding wine, Fox Mao and Fox Yan came crying to see Chong Er, asking him to go and avenge them. It turned out that after the reign of Gong Zi Gong Er, he gave an order, saying, "All those who followed Chong Er must return within three months and reform themselves; after the deadline, all of them were guilty of death, and those whose fathers and brothers did not ask them to return were also guilty of death." The father of Fox Mao and Fox Yan, Fox Tu, was killed by him because he refused to ask them to return. Chong Er told Duke Mu of Qin about this, who decided to send an army to fight for his son-in-law into the state of Jin. It so happened that Luan Zhi, the great minister of Jin, sent his son Luan Dun to Qin. Luan Dun said to Duke Chong Er, "Duke Gong Zi Niang has killed loyal people and mistreated them. The rest of the ministers in the court, except Lu Sheng and Ying Rui, like Han Jian, Qin Qin ...... and our family, are planning to rise, just waiting for the arrival of the duke to act as an inside man." Duke Mu of Qin sent a large army and asked Pi Bao to be the vanguard, and personally led Bai Li Xi, Gong Zi Kwai, Gong Sun Zhi, and others to escort Duke Chong Er back to Jin.

In 636 BC (16 years of King Xiang of Zhou, 24 years of Duke Mu of Qin, and 36 years of King Cheng of Chu), they arrived at the Yellow River and planned to cross it by boat. Duke Mu of Qin divided half of his troops to escort Duke Chong'er across the river, leaving half of his troops on the west bank of the Yellow River as a pick-up. He said to Duke Chong'er, "When you return to Jin, don't forget us!" He said and shed tears. Chong Er was even more reluctant to let him go.
