No oil. No Fuel. No Society.

What happens to the world when all the oil is used?

By Rachel SlaterPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

Everyone thought that fossil fuels were endless. The Earth had enough of it right? There were pipelines all over the world; tapping into oil wells and transporting it to be processed into plastics, feedstocks, asphalt, roads, and fuel. Coal from coal mines creating electric energy across the world to fuel power plants. Natural gas for cooking, heating, and electricity in homes; and to create thermal output. You would be surprised on how much our world relied on fossil fuels as a whole. Unfortunately, it would run out. And we wouldn't be prepared soon enough for it.

We're stuck with cars as lawn ornaments now. We still have some electricity from wind turbines, dams, and solar power panels but that isn't sufficient enough to help everybody. The cost prices of goods have sky rocketed since supply stocks are limited now. There are some people trying to create diesel fuel from cooking oil in their backyards. Some people are cutting down trees for heat in their homes since the price of electricity has gone up. Some people with electric cars are offering their services to people; while others are riding bikes and now horses to their destinations. It's like we've regressed back into the 1800s.

I live a bit of a ways away from the nearest store. So it's a real inconvenience to have to go all the way down there. It takes up to 3 hours on foot going one way. Thankfully I have a bike but I can't carry much. I did have a car, but with no fuel I can't go anywhere in it. There were rumors going around that people have been tuning their cars, 2000s and older, to run on ethanol; similar to the E85 fuel... but who really knows. There has been so much false hope lately that I don't know what to believe anymore.

Crime rates have gone up. People are fighting over resources in stores. There seems to be more robberies too, mainly in banks and jewelry stores so they can make a profit to provide for their families. But who can blame them? We've been destroying the world for so many years, it's finally come back to bite us. It's every man for themselves. At least the ozone layer has been healing itself now that there's no carbon output from machinery and motor vehicles. So we got that going for us I guess.

My mother told me to hide all of our valuable belongings somewhere in the back yard. She was able to find a wooden jewelry box and put her most prized pieces in it; most of them being sentimental. I had to put my heart locket in it. It was made of pure silver. I didn't want to. It was a piece of me... but I had no choice. If someone saw me wearing it while out in the town I could be robbed for it. She didn't want me to risk my life for my necklace. So we buried them in the back yard under the chicken coop. Hopefully no one would think to dig in there to find it. I know I wouldn't.

And another thing, curfews were set in place. Stores and businesses had to close an hour before sundown. No one was to be out after dark. Gang activity has greatly increased, especially in congested areas in towns. Murders and homicides have increased at night. If you go into the cities, you'll see windows boarded up with wood or metal panels. Gangs have been breaking into homes and raiding pantries, valuables, and killing people. Then they turn around and sell it during the day for an outrageous price; it gives them a profit, especially when stores are out of certain things. A lot of people have moved out of the city and into the rural areas where crime isn't as bad to avoid the violence. The police are around but they have themselves to look out for too. So they aren't much help.

The government said they would bring resources to the areas where it's needed the most. We all need it. It honestly feels like they don't care for us. Like we're expendable. But what should we expect from the government after such an event? They only care about themselves.

It's become a true disaster here. I never thought that this would happen to us. You would think something like this would happen in a hundred years or longer. Things will only get worse too. My mom was talking about us moving out a bit further into the country, so we could have room to grow more vegetables and have a set up to catch rain water... she isn't too concerned about the crime right now since we aren't exactly in the city. But we don't have a way out there. I guess we're better off than most people but it's still not ideal.

The world has become a darker place. While the Earth lives, we are left to die; scrounging around for food and water, just trying to get by. I suppose we deserve it after everything we caused; animal extinctions, deforestation, oil spills, carbon output, destroying the atmosphere and environments... It's our turn now. There's no escaping it. This is our new reality. Whether we want to believe it or not.
