MURPHY'S LAW
"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."
Completing the renovation of their first fixer-upper, Mary & Marvin Miller were on the lookout for another home to be refurbished. Their plan was to rent out 130 Elm Street and move into the property needing TLC.
After locating and securing their next project, the Millers advertised their home on social media. Immediately, they had a renter. Mr. Aimes, who claimed to be a businessman from Canada, signed the rental agreement.
Immediately, Mr. Aimes applied for a home equity loan by impersonating the owner. Mr. Aimes had successfully made off with $400.000 on his previous heist in Canada.
Upon receiving the check for $390,00 from the mortgage company, Mr. Aimes drove to the PCP Bank planning to cash the check and purchase $3,000 in traveler's checks.
Normally, Mary would have been the cashier, but hours earlier, she went into labor. Sandy, her supervisor, was filling in. Calmly, Mr. Aimes approached Sandy making his request.
Looking at the check, Sandy asked for Mr. Miller's driver's license. Using the pretext that she had to go to the vault, Sandy hit the silent police alarm and called Marvin Miller her neighbor.
