I intend to post ae new chapter a month. Please stay tuned and I hope you enjoy.

Prologue

It’s been 30 years since the war destroyed most of America and multiple EMP’s strategically demolished the power grid across our once powerful nation. Historically, war is over land or natural resources, but this war was for power. Russia wanted to be the Superpower that America was. Russia created treaties with other power nations such as China, Iran, and Britain and brought America under attack in what is known as World War III. After 8 years of America fighting on her own soil against missiles, atomic and ground warfare, America took the greatest hit of all. Russia hit America with nationwide spread of EMPs, also known as electromagnetic pulses, which took out all of America’s computerized and electronic abilities. The final EMPs to strike were America’s fall. What little had been left standing through the years of atomic bombs, ground warfare and missiles had been depleted when the electronic grid was destroyed. The electronic system crashing nationwide prevented factories from running, food being processed, oil from being distributed. The EMP’s took away every known way of life known to America.

In theory, rebuilding the GRID should have taken about 18 months, but Americans turned on one another, fearing when the next meal would come, looting homes, and murdering one another. Chaos erupted and people killed out of desperation. Survival had become the primary belief system and the rules of morality no longer existed. The government was no longer standing which led to anarchy. People fending for themselves, taking what they needed at whatever the cost. War destroyed America’s land, but her people destroyed her heart.

After eight years of war on our homeland, those left to pick up the shambles were lucky to be alive or even have the means to survive. Everywhere you look now, there are destroyed buildings, massive holes where the ground once laid, abandoned vehicles, and unending seas of graves; very little has been untouched by the carnage.

Seven years ago, America founded a new government to reconstruct what she had lost. Americans now blindly adhere to the new laws set by our Council to survive and rebuild. Some have rebelled against the new government while others have agreed that structure is what we will need to begin again. We have 10 stations, which are the cities under the new America. Each station serves a different purpose to the country and they all work together as one, to survive.

The Metropolis, now our nation’s capital, lies in Chicago where our Cabinet resides. The cabinet makes decisions about what cities are salvageable, where each citizen will live, what jobs we will conduct and how to transport and share goods from one city to the next. There is no longer a president, but now there are 2 representatives, one male and one female, from each station, to guide decisions about restructure and make sure each citizen is contributing to their full effectiveness. Once the land of the free and home of the brave, we are now the land of the struggling, the poor, and home of the compliance to the Council. Once a democracy, we are now run under a totalitarian government, where everyday life is survival for all.

My name is Rainey Smalls. I just turned 18 and in 3 weeks I will say goodbye to my family and the only life I have ever known to travel to Metropolis. I don’t know what the future holds for me. The fear of the unknown is the drive that makes me want to succeed. The cabinet will determine where I will live and how I will contribute to our county, or maybe life will choose me for some greater destiny.
