Everett blinked away sleep, a wide grin creeping its way onto his face. His heart began to race in excitement. He eagerly bounded out of bed, ready for today to begin. It was one day closer, and he could hardly wait.

Rushing around his room in anticipation, he swiftly threw on his clothes. Deftly pulling his green shirt over his head and securing it into place, he smiled at the skull in Santa hat featured on the center of the shirt. He loved this shirt; it combined his two favorite things: Halloween and Christmas. With the rest of his coordinated outfit on Everett was ready.

He bounced out the door, heart aglow at the surrounding décor. Purple bats dangled from the ceiling. Faux cobwebs lined the windows, dotted with little, black spiders. Ghost cut-outs lined the walls. Each table featured pumpkins, snowmen, and reindeer. His precious collection of The Nightmare Before Christmas Funko Pop figures was placed with care; Santa Jack, Snowman Jack, Jack on a snowmobile with presents, Santa, and glow-in-the-dark Zero were the perfect fit for the season. Listening to the movie’s soundtrack, Everett punched out the next day of his The Nightmare Before Christmas advent calendar. The big day was less than a week away; the anticipation was excruciating.

Everett passed the white Christmas tree decked out with orange, purple, and black ornaments. The orange and purple lights twinkled much like Everett’s eyes. He skipped up to the table, smiling at the breakfast awaiting him on the table. His mom made him pumpkin flavored pancakes in the shape of a ghost, pumpkin, and pine tree. He hungrily dug into the festive feast, eager to fill his belly.

With breakfast finished he bounded to the door, grabbing the bags and his backpack after giving his mom a hug. They passed the arrangement of holiday inflatables on the way: Santa Jack Skellington, Frosty the Snowman, and the group from the Island of Misfit Toys featured in the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The two were off to school, entering the family’s black car. Everett bounced in the seat, excited for the last day before winter break.

His mother parked the car, and the two exited, walking up towards the elementary school. Everett’s hands were full, but he didn’t mind. The huge grin never left his face; nothing would faze him today.

Serena noticed the two approaching and gave them a warm smile. She opened the door and greeted, “Good morning, Everett! Happy last day before winter break!” Noticing his festive shirt, she added, “Awesome shirt! I almost thought that was Jack Skellington on your shirt. It’s super cool and spooktacular!”

Everett’s grin grew even larger. “Thanks!”

“Oh, it’s one of his favorites,” Everett’s mother remarked with a smile. “He’s definitely ready for the upcoming holiday. Since Halloween is his favorite, we celebrate ‘Creepmas’ at our house. Our Halloween decorations remain though the winter, and the Christmas décor joins the rest once December comes around.”

Serena contemplated the idea. “‘Creepmas,’ huh? That’s a fun idea. The Nightmare Before Christmas is the perfect fit for such a holiday,” she observed. “One of the boys I babysit would absolutely love ‘Creepmas,’ as would all the other The Nightmare Before Christmas fans.”

Everett nodded fervently, excited that someone else understood his passion. Beaming from ear to ear, he handed one of the bags to Serena. “This is for you! Merry Creepmas!” Everett proclaimed with gusto.

“Thank you so much!” Serena exclaimed, heart warmed by his kindness. “You’re so sweet!”

His smile turned bashful as he waved goodbye to his mother.

“Have a wonderful rest of your day and a spooktacular holiday!” Serena wished his mother.

Serena and Everett joined the other kiddos playing in the cafeteria, as they waited for the school day to begin. Everett rushed off to hand a giftbag to the other before care worker, greeting the other children with a smile along the way.

Curious, Serena opened the gift. A gentle smile graced her face. She wasn’t surprised at all to find a Santa Jack Skellington mug inside the giftbag; it was extremely fitting for Everett and his “Creepmas.” Noticing a card, Serena opened the envelope and read its written contents. Her eyes teared up at the touching gesture. Everett and his mom were the sweetest! Everett took the time to draw a Pikachu fitted in a holiday sweater; it was too cute! His mom sincerely thanked her for always being a warm, kind presence and all that she did; they always looked forward to seeing Serena each morning, as she made every day special, and her kind words made their day. Feeling all warm inside, Serena gently packed up the gift. Everett’s family is too sweet—they made her day with their kindness. Serena left feeling genuinely appreciated. Working with such sweet kids and families made the job worthwhile. With a soft smile Serena welcomed the holiday season.
