Sheavulfa: Goddess of the Moon and Lycans

The tale begins when a man and a woman were madly in love with each other, as many of these tales do. The man’s name was Lycas and the woman’s name was Lunas, and it was a match made in the heavens. They would spend every moment with each other, professing their love to one another and promising to be wed when they came of age.

However, there was another man who was in love with Lunas. His name was Bane, and he was very rich and powerful. He was used to getting what he wanted since birth. He wanted Lunas, and he was ready to do anything to Lycas to get her.

The time for them to come of age was at last approaching, and Lycas continued to visit Lunas every day, bringing her gifts and singing songs. Bane watched from the bushes, silently studying his rival and planning how best to get rid of him.

One day, when Lycas was visiting his love, Bane stepped out of the bushes and appeared before them both. To Lunas’ horror, he beat Lycas savagely and drove him away. Badly wounded, Lycas managed to retreat to a nearby cave in the hopes of healing. He cursed Bane’s name and wished to save his love from such a horrible man, but his wounds would not allow it. He prayed to the moon, the stars, and the heaven’s above that a way to defeat Bane and save his love would present itself to him.

His wish would be granted by a goddess named Sheavulfa. She appeared to him in the form of a travelling woman and brought him food and drink and cared for his wounds. Not knowing who she was, but grateful for all she had done, he told her his woes and asked her what he could do.

Sheavulfa offered him a choice. She revealed to him that it was in her power to offer him the strength and power to kill Bane and save his love. She offered immunity from Bane’s weapons, and the strength of ten men. But she also warned him of the price. He would lose some of his humanity forever in the form of a half-beast. To make sure he never fell into the same form of greed Bane had, he was also not allowed to take his wealth, only his woman. And to make sure he would not lose control to his animal nature, he would always be forced to obey the love of his life.

Lycas agreed and, under the light of the full moon, was given the shape of a large wolf. His teeth like knives, his claws like nails, and his fur as light as his fair hair had been. Within him, he felt such great strength as to rend a tree in half with but one swipe of his paw. He thanked Sheavulfa for her gift in a language he had never understood before, but now knew entirely. He also promised to return to the cave so that he may repay her.

Lycas arrived at Bane’s house where the upcoming wedding was being prepared, and discovered the guards could not hurt him with their spears or swords. Bane was yelling at Lunas to marry him when Lycas arrived through the window. He pounced upon Bane and effortlessly ripped out his throat with his strong teeth. Lunas screamed and tried to escape, but the doors had been locked by Bane to prevent her departure, for he knew she did not love him and did not want her running off. Lycas threw off the transformation, causing bones to shift and snap back into place. He reverted to a half-beast form of a man with wolf ears and a tail. The gift not allowing him to be fully human ever again. Lunas, however, was overjoyed when she discovered it was he who had saved her. She embraced him immediately and cared not that he was no longer human. They rejoiced to be together again and decided to run away from mankind, for they knew people would only hunt him down and kill him if they saw he was not one of them. They took a few items they would need to start a new life, but when Lycas reached for Bane’s silver, he discovered it burned him upon its touch. Lycas remembered the warning against greed, and left it all.

He took Lunas to the cave where Sheavulfa had saved him. She was already gone, but she left a mystical orb infused with her power. Lycas heard her voice both in his head and within the orb. She named him Alpha Chief and told him to start a pack with Lunas. She instructed him that his bite would transfer the gift she gave him to the one he loved. Sheavulfa promised him she would watch over him and his clan for as long as the orb was kept safe, for it was her link from the mystical realm to the earth.

Lycas did as he was told and even created a statue in her honor, as thanks for her aide. The orb was placed at the base for protection. Lycas and Lunas began the Lycan clan that would honor Sheavulfa as long as they lived.

This is why Lycans are as strong as ten men, immune to weapons, weak to silver, adverse to Wolfsbane, fighting one another for mates, followers of the whims of the moon, Luna, and singing to her still.

To this day, the statue of Sheavulfa is still within the cave watching over her children, the orb pulsing with each change of the moon.
