Turning, I strode to the doors of the chapel and cast them open. It was close to noon, the street leading to my little church was empty. The main street some ways away was busy enough, for a Tuesday. It all seemed..... wrong. Boss fights were supposed to happen in the middle of the night shrouded in darkness that lent to the monsters' power with rain pelting the hero making things all the more difficult.

“You’re pregnant!” For recently married couple Dina and Dean Rawlings, this was century-worth headlining news. It honestly came as more of a relief rather a shock or pleasant surprise, given how long they tried, and many minutes later, looking at trees and houses whip by from the passenger seat, Dina was ecstatic. She was overwhelmed with joy. After all the tests, after those almost idiotic “try-at-home” methods, they were finally starting a family.

On the morning that my adventure began, I found myself dozing on my bed. I had already dressed and drawn the curtains, allowing a golden blanket of sunlight to bathe me as I stirred. Summer sounds greeted my waking senses; rustling, flapping and chirruping floated in through the open window. The combined scent of flowers in bloom mingled with fresh grass cuttings and barbecue smoke; wafting in on each fresh current of air.

Maria didn’t like the thing with silver eyes. It wore mirrored aviator sunglasses most of the time to obscure them, but Maria had seen them anyway. Those eyes glowed in the dark, and they were shaped wrong—more like a cat’s eyes. The other survivors called it Lauren, but that was a girl’s name—a person’s name. Maria didn’t trust Lauren and didn’t want to be anywhere near it, but she couldn’t stop staring in its direction. Troubled, Maria rubbed her heart-shaped locket nervously.

About halfway through the workday you realize you have not gotten your best friend a birthday gift yet, you panic and start to look up things they might like. You find a heart shaped locket that would be perfect for them.
