Long Way Home My mom let me know I ought to never date a person who didn't have his own vehicle. She said that it set some terrible trend, stirred up the lines among supplier and accommodated. There's nothing more polite than the front seat, is what she shared with me. She's forever been a piece outdated in like that. I sort of got what she was talking about. Who needs to be with the person who's continuously making an inquiry or two to get someone's truck? However at that point once more, I was somewhat frantic. My mom and her principles didn't consider the dating pool's desperate state. So I chose rather to never drive a person around anyplace. I won't be the driver. I met my delightful transport sweetheart at a local party underneath a haze of smoke. He had these grandiose rings on his fingers, the sort you purchase at an expressions and specialties fair on a Saturday morning. Wavy, unkempt hair. I won't ever be so dumb as to say it was head over heels love, yet I saw the potential. I'd take the rings off his fingers, remove the cigarette from his thin left hand, pin the wavy hair behind his noticeable ears. We'd be wizardry together.

There was a time when the world was more cooperative. Back during the Spanish Flu, the government did not need to mandate anything. They had instructions on how to make your own mask. People generally would comply. There were no convoys and protests. If we look throughout history that has been the way. There was colonization but no real threats to people who did not assimilate in the past. People generally tried to do things in the best interest. Fast forward to the 2000 Presidential Election. Al Gore had the popular vote and still lost. What happened? A massive riot erupted in the streets. What we saw then was fireworks compared to the explosion on January 6th, 2021.

“Gonna be a hot one, t’day.” “Yep.” “Hmm…” The fly-speckled screen door was flapping lightly in the summer breeze as the last one walked in. That was Sal, an old-timer who still drove his Chevy up to the gas station-café every morning to get his regular cup of coffee and scrambled eggs. Chester and Mitch were waiting for him, already digging into their second cups of coffee and muffins they liked for their breakfast. It was warm, moving quickly to humidity as the sun crawled patiently over the horizon. There was not much else for that sun to move over in this town. Going through our little space, if you blinked, you missed it. Chester would always say that when he got the chance (every other hour if he wasn’t checked); Mitch had to make sure the pumps were working (a joke most of the time since they averaged one customer every blue moon – another favorite saying they passed around). I was just running the café, trying to keep this stupid place going for some reason related to family loyalty and the fact that I liked these bums. At least they never asked for credit; they were all set up somehow (Mitch had the job; Sal his pension; Chester some money from the military and that injury he played up when it got cold). And they were back.
