Jon started his day by getting out of bed and into the shower. He did this every morning but today was different. Today Jon was preparing himself for a date. Not just any date, this was his first since losing his fiancé in a car accident. Jon wasn’t sure if he really wanted to do this but he knew it was time to move on. You see Jon was driving the car that killed his fiancé. They were on their way home from a dinner out and they started arguing over a slice of chocolate cake.

Jon said to Lisa, “You know with the wedding coming up so soon, you should not have eaten that slice of chocolate cake”. Lisa told him he should not be trying to tell her what she should or should not do. He got very upset, turned to look at her when the car drifted over the center line and was struck by a pickup truck. The truck tried to swerve past on their right but did not make it. He hit their car right in the passenger door. Lisa’s head hit the door with such force that she was killed instantly.

That was four years ago. Jon had been working at the local store for almost a year when one of the young ladies there befriended him. They started spending a lot of time together. They would go to the park for lunch and sit and talk. Jon would always put her off when she would ask him about going to dinner or a movie. He was not ready for a relationship because he was afraid what might happen. He did not want to get close to someone again and then hurt them or worse, kill them.

Lisa knew about Jon’s past, how he lost his fiancé. They talked about it often. Lisa just wanted him to be happy. She wanted to be his best friend and hopefully someday be his wife. So she would ask him several times each week about going out for dinner or a movie or just getting together at night at one of their homes. Jon finally gave in and had her come over to his house and they had a wonderful evening. They played some games, watched some television and had dinner.

After dinner Lisa asked if he had any desert. Jon told her that he did not do deserts anymore. Lisa said that was just silly. She told him the cake is not what killed his girlfriend. Jon said she was his fiancé, not his girlfriend. Lisa apologized and said she would not bring up desert again. For the next several weeks, they would only see each other at work. Rarely had lunch together and spoke even less. Lisa apologized to him for being so insensitive and after a while Jon began having lunch with her again.

The two of them had fun together and really started getting much closer because of that night. Jon decided that it was time to take her out to a real dinner at a nice restaurant. The day he asked Lisa, she was so excited she just grabbed him and hugged him. You would think that he asked her to marry him. The rest of the day drug on for Jon because he was so anxious about the date. He thought about where he should take her, what they should do afterwards and where he wanted this relationship to go. He was really starting to love their time together. He decided that he would take her to the same restaurant where he proposed to his fiancé.

Jon washed his car, got on his best suit and splashed on his favorite cologne. He went to pick up Lisa and they headed off to eat. Lisa thanked him for finally asking her out. She told him she was so in love with him and always has been. Jon was embarrassed by her comments but said he loved her too. At the restaurant, they had great conversation and a delicious meal. Jon said he really enjoyed himself tonight and thanked Lisa for going out with him. Just then a waiter came over with a giant slice of chocolate cake with a heart on it. Lisa told Jon this was to celebrate their love.

You could see that Jon was very distraught over the sight of the cake. Lisa said she forgot that was what they had their argument over when his fiancé died. He said it was okay, but insisted on leaving. They got into the car and drove in silence. Half way home, Jon looked at Lisa and yelled at her for being so inconsiderate. Just then, they were hit by a truck. When Jon opened his eyes he was laying on the roadway staring at the chocolate cake.
