we snuck slowly along the wall, six shadows flitting silently on our way to the treasure. we had waited for darkness to fall. all was still and silent;
we crept to the entrance and stopped to listen. quiet. a clock ticked slowly in a hallway, it’s cadence startlingly loud. after a moment, we headed out. the rooms were large and cavernous, but we hugged the wall to make our way to the target. the walk wasn’t far, but feels far in such open spaces. we were on alert, ears cocked for any sounds, watching for any movement. but nothing. we were safe for now.
we spotted it when we turned a corner. we had been watching to be sure it would be there, not hidden away, which would make it harder to get. but there it was, ready for the taking, nothing to stop us. gold, out in the open. we rushed forward, but we did not cease our caution, even as we surrounded our coveted prize.
together we could bring nearly the whole bag back, to then share with the rest of our nest. the new babies were growing quickly and would soon be able to eat potato chips.
