GLOBAL WARMING

Let-Go My-Eggo

Mr. Peters, with great foreboding explained that a giant meteor had fallen out of the sky somewhere around the Yucatan peninsula, millions of years ago, and that is what killed off all the dinosaurs. Jimmy loved science the best of all his subjects because it caused him to fantasize remarkable stories in his mind. He raised his hand to ask Mr. Peters a question.

“Yes, Jimmy what is your question?” The teacher asked.

“Well Mr. Peters if the meteor killed off all of the giant dinosaurs why didn’t it kill off all us’ humans too?”

Mr. Peters scratched his head for a moment then answered. “That’s a good question Jimmy. It could have been that some of the earth’s inhabitants, including man, may not have been in an area that was as affected by the meteor. Then again there is another theory, there always is. Some scientists believe that man was still a small rodent creature when the meteor hit, and the larger dinosaurs went extinct. Man had not yet begun to evolve into the human beings we know today. But then again there has been recently discovered signs that man did in fact live among the giant behemoths. We will just have to, wait, and see, until there are more findings made on the subject. Until then let us just believe that it was in fact a meteor that changed the course of dinosaurs.”

Jimmy’s mind shot back into the past, as it often did. His daydreams were much more exciting than school. “I bet I can solve the riddle of the dinosaurs,” he thought. Jimmy sat comfortably in his chair and drifted back to a time when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. He envisioned a T-Rex chasing a family for his evening meal. They much resembled his own mother, father, himself, and his sister Marge. Through the thorny bushes and brambles, they ran. If they could only make it to their small cave by the waterfall, they had a chance but, in his heart, he knew that it was too late. He could feel the hot breath of the T-Rex blowing against the short hairs of his neck.

Then it happened Marge his loving sister tripped trying to jump over a log. Jimmy’s heart sank he knew it was over for her—this day she would sacrifice her life for the family.

The T-Rex tried to stop and pick off Marge, but his giant heavy legs skidded on the mucky ground. He tumbled over, and over, finally striking his head on a pointed boulder momentarily it dazed the creature. Marge seized the opportunity and quickly jumped to her feet. The race was on again. The dinosaur was a lot slower now, the blow to his head had knocked out some of the fight in him. Out of breath and very thankful the whole family made it to the cave safe. After counting heads and making sure no one was injured they began recounting the death-defying experience. They continued to discuss the chase until, as usual, it became a familiar humorous story. How else could they cope with the horrendous times and conditions that they lived in. When finally, they felt they had mocked the dinosaur enough they carefully planned their scheme for that night’s meal.

Waiting until it was dark, they sneaked out of the cave through the small opening at the top. It was only a short trek through the woods to the dinosaur’s nest. The T-Rex was still out searching for his next kill, as they knew he would be. Brushing back some of the cover leaves from the nest they found that there were two new large freshly laid eggs just waiting for the taking. They also knew that there were other families taking eggs from this lair, and soon they would have to travel deeper into the forest to find a new source of food. With all the families living so richly on the eggs of dinosaurs there were fewer and fewer dinosaur babies being born.

Jimmy asked his dad, “do you think we will ever run out of dinosaur eggs? They seem to be getting harder and harder to find and when we do find a new nest the competition for the eggs gets tougher and tougher.”

Dad answered. “Don’t worry son there will always be enough dinosaurs laying eggs to sustain our appetite. Now grab that last big egg and let us get out of here.”

Now we know what really happened to the dinosaurs, and why they became extinct. Debunking the meteoric theory, humans simply ate the dinosaur eggs faster than they, the creatures, could produce them. “Jeepers! Now I know. No eggs –no babies!” Jimmy had had an epiphany.

After school and later that evening Jimmy was talking over the day’s experiences with his dad. He asked him about the things he had learned at school that day. Jimmy’s Dad always liked it when his children asked him about school things.

His dad agreed with Jimmy. “You have a healthy attitude about the matter Jim we can never ask enough questions, especially on things the jury is still debating. Now take the subject about global warming. You have heard about global warming, haven’t you? Well, they say that in just a couple of years there will be enough garbage in the atmosphere that it will block out the sun. All life will fall into eternal darkness and down will come the curtain on Mother Earth. Well let me tell you something. This old earth has been around for a lot longer than we have and has been in tougher circumstances than we could imagine. It has gotten through before and I think it will survive again. On a personal nature, Ice ages come and go and so do global warmings. Our job is to do all we can to survive the situations as they materialize.

Picture this scenario. The meteor that fell at the Yucatan peninsula was on purpose. It was intended to manipulate global warming and control the ice age that was freezing the earth into oblivion. One hand helping the other.

The people or whatever was around back in the day must have been a little more advanced than we are today. In any case we can only live one day at a time. Good night son, I am going to sleep on it.”
