Sandy cussed softly under her breath as she reached into her sweater pocket and found it empty.

Oblivious to Sandy’s distress, Minnie was circling under her feet, wagging her tail and wiggling happily because her Mommy was awake and they were about to go outside.

At least they will as soon as Sandy remembered where she stashed Minnie’s extra leash.

Truth be told, Sandy was a little sad that the leash broke because she had it customized with Minnie’s name and Sandy’s cell phone number on it.

The rumor about small dogs and feistiness turned out to be true in Minnie’s case. One time, poor lil Minnie couldn’t wait to go outside and literally wriggled past Sandy right out the back door.

Before Sandy had a chance to fasten her leash.

You would’ve thought lil Minnie was a greyhound the way she took off a hellin out into the parking lot of Sandy’s old apartment complex.

Sandy freaked out immediately because all she could imagine was the poor puppy getting squished under the tire of some unaware driver’s car speeding through the parking lot on his way to work.

But Minnie didn’t just run around the parking lot, no, that would be too convenient for Sandy. Minnie decided to run around the back of the building, past the resident geese and ducks and into the man made lake the complex carved out for aesthetics.

Of course, Sandy was hysterical crying for Minnie to get out of the lake.

And of course, according to what she read about most small dogs, Minnie didn’t care and just frolicked around at the water’s edge.

Sandy was nervous but she finally attempted to put some bass in her voice.

“Minnie get your gat damn furry ass back here right now?”

Minnie continued to frolic.

Sandy’s nervousness was slowly morphing into fear. So what do most humans do when they’re scared???

They feign anger.

“Fine, The Moms is goin home. You can stay here with these dirty ass birds in this dirty ass water if you want, but I ain’t chasin after you no mo.”

And when Sandy attempted to lunge for Minnie and the fur ball took off again…

Sandy pretended to walk back to her apartment.

But as she continued to walk she heard scurrying in the leaves. Sandy looked over her shoulder and sure enough it was lil Minnie following behind her.

Inwardly, Sandy was gleeful that her crazy, fiesty emotional support doggie was smart enough to follow her home.

But outwardly she knew she couldn’t show the dog she was happy because if Minnie saw Sandy all happy and cheerful and ready to pick her up…Minnie would dash away from her again.

And Sandy was tired that day. So she pretended not to see Minnie and allowed her to think that she beat Sandy home.

That was the day she had Minnie’s leash customized.

With her phone number on it.

With Minnie still wriggling and now starting to whimper, all at once it dawned on Sandy that the broken leash with her phone number embroidered on it was not in her possession anymore.

And as she walked over to the mudroom and opened the junk drawer by the sink to grab Minnie’s other leash, Sandy’s cell phone rang in her other pocket on her sweater.

“Good Evening ,”

Sandy, when she first got her phone had decided rather than saying “hello” she would be more formal and provide a salutation based on the time of day. For whatever reason, she thought it sounded proper and perhaps professional.

“Well I’m reckonin that it’s fittin to be a good Mawnin for Minnie’s mama if she wouldn’t mind heading towards the path so I can give her this here leash I done got her.”

Sandy didn’t think at her age she could still get butterflies, but she did, and she had the nerve to smile when she clicked on Minnie’s leash and went out her back door.
