Exploring the GMO Debate

Safety, Concerns, and Food Security

There is always an ongoing debate about the utilization of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), whether they are crops, fruits or medicinal products. Safety is the main reason behind this discussion and acceptance of GMOs in society.

The world population is growing at an alarming rate; we need to address the issue of food security as well. So, there is a need to produce food in larger quantities. But some things should be considered twice about what’s on your plate.

While many scientific studies have shown GMOs to be safe for consumption, there are concerns regarding their long-term impact. A significant problem is allergies. When genes from different species are mixed, they might make new allergens in food.

Animal studies demonstrated weight gain, pancreatic and kidney defects, immune system toxicity, and blood biochemistry changes. However, rigorous testing and regulatory processes are in place to assess and mitigate this risk.

Another issue is that GMOs may introduce bacteria in the human digestive tract that are resistant to antibiotics. The excessive use of antibiotics in livestock feed has caused antibiotic-resistant bacteria in human intestines since dairy and meat contain antibiotics. Strict rules and research about GMO's regulations must be conducted to reduce this risk.

Animals should also be treated as living organisms. They must experiment with kindness and care because sometimes, the introduction of genes from one animal or organism to another can cause drastic changes in their body and behaviour. If certain things happen, the result could be disastrous.
