Where'd Everyone Go

Rachel woke up when the alarm on her smartphone went off. She got right up, putting on her robe and houseshoes. Today was the day! She turned 18 years old today! Finally, she was entering adulthood! She was no longer a child.

Rachel danced into her bathroom to clean her face and brush her hair before she went to the kitchen for breakfast. As she sang Happy Birthday to herself, she wondered why the house was so quiet. Maybe her parents had planned a surprise party for her this morning. With that thought, Rachel couldn’t wait to get downstairs to see what her gifts would be.

Rushing out of her room and down the hall, she ran to the kitchen to see what was happening, where she came upon an utterly barren room. Nothing was in the kitchen, not even the dishwasher and stove. Freaking out, Rachel ran from room to room, only to be met with emptiness—no furniture, decorations, or family in any of the rooms.

Where’d everyone go? Rachel wondered. Everyone was here last night before she had gone to her room. No one was in the house now—no car in the driveway or the garage.

Walking past the front door, she saw a note taped to it. Going to the door, she pulled the message down. Unfolding it, she opened it up.

Dear Rachel:

Well, I told you there’d be some changes come your birthday.

Happy Birthday. We’re moving—no need to follow us. You're on your own.

Love,

Mom and Dad

Rachel must have been one bad child. Anyway, she is an adult now. Maybe we should all chuck them out, tough love after all. I moved out and back in two times before I finally accepted that I had to stay out. This was great.

Sad, that is not a great Birthday present. Well done I believe I shall try this challenge. A few of my stories have twists
