Talking Eggs

Tala looked around the kitchen as her stomach continued to twist and growl from the lack of food on her stomach.

“Damn that meeting this morning. I need to get something quick now. I don’t want to faint,” she said as she dashed to the refrigerator.

Just as she was going to open the refrigerator door, Tala paused. The sound of murmuring could be heard from inside the appliance. She looked around and frowned. Strange, since Tala knew she was the only person home. Her family had gone on a trip to see their relatives. No one should be home right now.

Slowly gripping the refrigerator door, Tala slowly opened the door to see a dozen brown eggs, placed neatly on the top shelf. As Tala gazed at the eggs, she screamed. The brown egg sitting in the front smiled and mouthed a strange sound at her, as if initiating a greeting.

“What the hell is this? What are…”

Before Tala could say anything else, each of the other eleven eggs suddenly turned around, sporting an expression of their own. Some smiling and others frowning, the eggs squirmed around as if having individual minds.

Suddenly, the first egg to confront Tala directed its gaze toward her.

“We…like to have fun….take us for a ride, mommy…”

Tala, still unable to believe what she was seeing, quickly jumped to her feet and slammed the door shut.

“Okay…okay…that was a dream…no, no, no…a hallucination. When I open this door…those eggs will just be….eggs,” she thought to herself.

Taking a deep breath, Tala gripped the refrigerator handle once more and slowly began to open the door. Each second felt like an hour but, for the sake of Tala’s nerves, she heard no sound. She smiled as she held the door completely open.

The dozen brown eggs all sat on the top shelf, inanimate as any other piece of food in the appliance.

“I’ll just cook something else,” she said to herself as she closed the door and began to walk to the pantry.

Just as Tala began to reach for the pantry door, a loud slamming noise pounded the door of the refrigerator. Tala jumped as she turned around to see the refrigerator door swing open on its own.

The dozen eggs sat on the top shelf, all starring with grim expressions as Tala looked on in horror.

“We said…we want to have fun…now take us out of this freezing confinement before you know how a piece of bacon feels.”

Tala froze as the eggs began to slowly roll themselves from the top shelf. As each egg began to roll from the refrigerator, three cracked open immediately as they hit the floor.

“Martyrs, they are! Use their sacrifice to free us from this cold prison!” One egg shouted as it began to roll. As the egg reached the edge of the shelf, it flung itself forward, bumping into multiple items like a pachinko ball in a machine.

Tala sat on the ground and tilted her head to the side.

“This was scary…like ten seconds ago but these eggs are a bit…extreme….”

As Tala watched each egg fling itself and ultimately fail, she could only watch as her fear turned into a yellow mess on the kitchen floor. After a few seconds, all of the eggs had fallen on the ground and smashed into multiple pieces.

With silence from all the commotion, Tala breathed a sigh of relief.

“Well, I guess those things took care of themselves. Now I need to clean up this mess.”

As Tala walked toward the closet, she could help but ponder, “how in the world do eggs become sentient. Eggs definitely shouldn’t talk…”

Without paying much attention,Tala opened the door to the closet where the mop was located. Without any warning, a small, monkey-like creature jumped at Tala, knocking her to the floor and quickly running away on two legs.

As Tala tried to pick herself up, she heard a loud scream come from the kitchen.

“What now?” She thought as she dashed back to the kitchen.

Just as Tala reached the kitchen, she noticed a completely clean floor. There were no traces of any broken eggs or any strange creature.

“What in the hell is going on? Maybe I need some fresh air…”

Tala, preparing to sigh, screamed as she turned and peered out the window. A strange creature with furry green fur, carrying an arm full of broken egg shells.

“Your house makes a terrible nest, human! The king’s men really are useless. I’ll have to put them together again,” the creature growled before jumping into a nearby tree and dashing away, taking the talking, broken eggs with him.
