Rowan was nearing the age seventy. She could feel the years slowly creeping up on her as she looked through the attic, which contained her childhood memories: an old doll here, school papers there. There were still old boxes, blankets, and clothes scattered around the floor.

Something caught her eye, gleaming in the light. A music box given to her by a close friend years ago. Rowan hesitated before stepping toward it. She wasn’t even sure it worked after all this time.

She had spent so much time keeping the past at bay; hearing that familiar melody could bring it all back. Still, her fingers hovered above it, and she reached for it.

Archer Tobias had been a lifelong friend. They grew up together, as neighbors, then friends, and then something much deeper. Something on a completely different level. They were inseparable from the time they were in Kindergarten. Their families would throw parties together, hold family events together, and even vacation together.

Her love for him grew before she even knew what it was. They were too young to understand their feelings, and Rowan never thought anything would be different for them. She was proven wrong before she even turned eighteen.

Summer brings in tourists and visitors, and that is exactly how Archer met the love of his life. Rowan didn’t even know it was happening. She had been sent away for months, and during those months, all she could think about was Archer.

When she received the wedding announcement at the end of the summer, it shocked her that Archer would be getting married. It felt like a sudden decision. She had just seen him months before with no changes on the horizon. Now his life was suddenly moving forward, and it was doing so without her.

Rowan married and had a family as well. She loved watching her kids grow up alongside Archer’s. Their families were so intertwined that by a twist of fate, her granddaughter Ivy was going to be married to Archer’s grandson Lucas by the end of the summer.

They were leaving behind something that would continue without them, carrying forward two families that had become so close, their fates would eventually become one.

Every day, Archer's memory was fresh in her mind. When she received the news of his passing, her heart shattered into a million pieces, and it never fully healed, and never would.

Her hands trembled as she opened the music box, allowing the soft and steady melody to fill the attic. Piece by piece, something inside her gave way, and a door opened.

A memory remained - a single moment in time.

The week before she left. The time they spent together on the beach, singing and talking about life and the future. What they wanted to do with their lives. Though unspoken, she thought this was a future they were going to build together.

Now watching their grandchildren, preparing for the wedding of a lifetime, and a future together, she realized their lives weren’t separate at all. It all led to here. Two roads, turning into one.

That was when she knew.

With strength leaving her in slow pieces, Rowan lowered herself into the scattered clothes and boxes. She closed her eyes, listening to the sweet lullaby fill her mind.

She allowed herself to slip away, the light from the attic fading into the distance.

What seemed like seconds later, she felt warmth and love. Opening her eyes, everything was gone. All that was there was him.

No time and distance. No waiting and hoping.

Rowan looked up into Archer's eyes and understood, without either of them saying a word, that she had finally arrived at the place she had been dreaming of all her life.
