Huny and Tomas had never dyed the eggs before. It was considered such a big job that it was always given to the more senior Bunnies. But this year, Peter Rabbit assigned them the task of dyeing the eggs orange—not all the eggs, mind you, but an eighth of them.
So Huny and Tomas try their best to make Peter proud of them with the hopes of eventually working up to the lovely blue color. So they dyed eggs orange, day in and day out. Until one day, their dyeing machine broke down. Unsure what to do, they didn’t want to disturb Peter, who was always busy this time of year. So they tried to dye a few eggs by paw, which didn’t work out so well because they got paw prints all over them. So they tried to tie a string around the eggs and dip them into the dye mixture, but that just left streaks around them.
Everything they tried left new designs all over the eggs. Suddenly, Peter showed up. He inspected their eggs. He liked them! He said that he loved their uniqueness! Then he went over to the dyeing machine and pulled a clover flower out of the gears, and it started working again.
As Peter hopped off, he told Huny and Tomas to keep up the good work.
