On April 5, 1722, the famous Dutch admiral Jacob Rogwin led a squadron in search of the so-called "Southern Continent" in the waters that Juan and Davis had visited.

At that time, they were sailing on the endless ocean, and the sailor in charge of the lookout suddenly noticed a green dot on the far sea, which looked like land. He immediately reported to Captain Rogwin.

Rogovin was amazed when he heard this, because the chart indicated that there was no land here. Rogovin immediately ordered the ship to sail there. When the ship approached, he saw that it was indeed an island, so he noted a dot in ink on the chart and marked "Easter Island" next to the black dot, because it happened to be Easter that day.

What he may not know is that he is naming one of the most confusing islands in the world.

This is a triangular island with a small area of less than 120 square kilometers. There is neither a river nor any trees. Only weeds grow on the ground. Rats are the only wild animals on the island.

As soon as Rogovin and his party set foot on the island, they were stunned by the sight in front of them.

In the southern part of the island, they saw the remnants of a huge stone wall, behind which stood hundreds of magnificent and breathtaking huge stone statues. Some of these huge stone statues lined up to look out to the sea, while others staggered, generally seven to eight meters in size. There are also about 100 stone platforms on which stone statues are erected. The large stone platform is 4.5 meters high and 90 meters long. The largest stone statue erected on the stone platform is ten meters high and weighs at least 50 tons. In addition, some stone statues also wear cylindrical red hats on their heads, which are called "Pukao" by the locals. From a distance, the red hat looks like a red crown, adding a noble and arrogant color to the stone statue. Not all stone statues have red hats. There are only more than 30 stone statues that enjoy this privilege. These stone statues wearing red stone hats are like nobles among many stone statues.

In total, Rogovin found more than 500 stone statues, in addition to 150 unfinished statues lying in the rubble piles of Rano Lolaco Crater. There are also stone tools such as stone castings, stone axes and stone chisels.

Although Easter Island is alone, for more than 200 years, many explorers and tourists from all over the world have landed on this island, but they have not been able to solve the mysteries brought by these stone statues on Easter Island -

Mystery 1: Where did the boulders on Easter Island come from?

Archaeologists have found several quarries in the mountains of Laku on the island. The rocks there were cut at will like a cake. On the quarry lay a lot of stones that had not been processed and stone statues that were only half processed. The face of one of the stone statues has been carved, and the back of the head is still connected to the mountain. It only takes a few more chisels. However, the mason who carved it did not do so.

Some people say that there may have been a volcanic eruption on Easter Island at that time, or there was a strong wind and tsunami. In order to survive, the masons abandoned their jobs and fled everywhere.

There are indeed three volcanoes on Easter Island, one in the center of the island, called Trevaka; one on the west end of the island, called La Nocao; and one on the east side of the island, called Polick. Geologists carefully examined those volcanoes and found that Easter Island was formed by volcanic eruptions. However, those volcanoes have ceased activity since humans lived here, and have long since become extinct volcanoes. This means that there was no volcanic eruption on Easter Island at that time. Residents of Easter Island often encounter disasters such as strong winds and tsunamis, so they don't need to panic like that. Besides, after the disaster passed, why didn't they go back to work?

Mystery 2: Why carve these megalithic statues?

Residents of Easter Island call the giant stone figures "Maoai". Some of the stone statues also wear cylindrical red hats on their heads, and local residents call them "Pukao".

What do these megalithic figures represent? Why did the residents of Easter Island carve these megalithic figures? Archaeologists went to ask the residents of Easter Island. Strangely, they did not know the origin of these megalithic figures, and none of them personally participated in the carving of stone statues.

Mystery 3: How did the stone statues weighing dozens of tons get to the mountain?

These boulder figures on Easter Island are all very heavy. The smallest stone hat is 2.5 tons, and the largest stone hat weighs more than ten tons. Scientists have measured that the distance between the boulder figures from the slope of the crater is 6 meters closest and the farthest is more than 100 meters. So, how did people put those heavy boulder figures in their current position at that time?

If you put these stone hats on the top of the stone statues, or transport the stone statues one by one to the slope or flat ground, at least there must be hoisting equipment. If you use the most primitive method of rolling wood and hoisting, you must also have wood.

However, archaeologists and scientists said after investigation that it is impossible for the soil on the island to grow thick trees. There are only a little sparse shrubs on the island. Could it be that people used grass and vines to weave ropes to transport them?

Scientists have done experiments, and the rattan net was pulled on the stone statues weighing dozens of tons and broke.

Mystery 4: What do the strange words and patterns mean?

When archaeologists investigated, they also found that there were some megalithic figures on Easter Island with inscriptions on the back of their necks. In 1863 AD, a French missionary named Eren Edlow came to Easter Island and said that these words were "the terrible spell of the devil", so he burned all the boards with strange characters on the island. However, some people feel that it is a pity and secretly hide some. Therefore, there are only 26 such boards with strange characters in museums around the world today.

In addition to being engraved on wooden boards, this strange writing pattern on Easter Island is also engraved in other places. On a large pile of boulders in front of a small village called Aurango on the island, there are many strange patterns of bird heads and people. Therefore, some people also call Easter Island "Birdman Island".

So what does this bizarre writing on Easter Island mean? What does the bizarre pattern of the bird's head represent? This is another puzzling mystery.

Mystery 5: Have the people of Easter Island looked down on where they live from above?

The people on Easter Island call the place where they live "Gibitoki Henua", which means "the navel of the earth". It sounds very strange, but when people look down from a high altitude When Easter Island, you will find that the name of the island by the Easter Islanders is not strange at all. It turns out that Easter Island happens to be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which happens to be the center of the world, isn't it the "navel of the world"?

Could it be that the people of Easter Island once looked down at where they lived from a height, which seems unlikely. So, who told them this? This is another difficult mystery to solve.

Mystery 6: Why are there so many ethnic groups on Easter Island?

The megalithic figure on Easter Island is a mystery, the wooden boards engraved with strange words on the island and the strange pattern of the bird's head are a mystery, in fact, even the people who live on Easter Island are a mystery.

After investigation and research, scientists said that Easter Island was inhabited as early as the 4th century AD, that is to say, in AD 398. At the beginning, Dutch Admiral Rogovin said in his memoirs that among those who prayed to the stone statues, "some of them had brown skin, and in terms of shades of color, they were similar to the Spaniards, but there were also darker complexions. people. Others are completely white-skinned, and there are people with red skin." Why are there so many ethnic groups on such a small island? How did they come to this small island? In ancient times, people did not have advanced navigation tools or navigational charts. It was impossible to drift across the vast ocean to a place that no one knew about.

That is to say, the earliest people on Easter Island must have come from peoples with a written history. Later, Heyerdahl conducted an expedition in Peru, and later on Easter Island. He found that the boulder figures on Easter Island had many similarities with the stone figures of Tiahuanaco in Peru. Their faces have obvious white features.

Mysterious and seductive, incredible, that's what impresses Easter Island.
