On a silent Christmas Eve, with the snow falling soft and pale, a midnight black cat by the name of Dutch awoke from his slumber. Stretching his long, sleek body, he made his way to the exterior door and exited through the small door that was just for him.
Pouncing, he leapt off the porch into the snow, leaving tiny little paw prints behind. Tilting his head left, then right, he listened for the sound of little squeaks. Then he headed off to explore the pine trees in the yard.
Leaping from snowdrift to snowdrift, climbing the pine trees, and scrambling among the branches, Dutch spent the evening chasing a particular squeak. Getting close just long enough to smell the prey, before it would lose him in the maze that was around them. Scampering back and forth until he was covered in snow and damp, Dutch kept the chase going quite merrily before he collapsed on a bed of pine needles.
As he lay catching his breath, preparing to continue his pursuit of the rodent he was chasing, Dutch heard a sound behind him. Twitching his ears, he turned his head to look, but before he spied what was behind him, he felt a small varmint launch upon his back. With quick little paws, it lit up to Dutch’s collar and jumped to his head.
Dutch immediately shot up, and started to run, until he caught a familiar scent in the air. Rolling his eyes up, he was happy to see his mouse friend looking down at him from between his ears. Sitting back down, Dutch reached a paw up, knocking his friend down. Together they sat as if they were in deep discussion for the next thirty minutes. Then the mouse turned to go his way and Dutch turned to go back towards the house.
Taking the long way, he walked through the falling snow, noticing how everything seemed to glow in the pure white landscape with his emerald green eyes. Enjoying the cold crispness of the frozen ground, he slowly prowled completely on guard. Reaching the porch, he leaped up the steps and turned and surveyed his Kingdom, before going inside.
Going back through his little bitty door, he heard a soft voice calling his name.
“Dutch! Dutch! Where are you, Kitty!”
He ran towards the voice, up the stairs to the second floor. Speeding down the hall, he stops in front of his girl. His beautiful girl. The one who knows just where to rub him behind his ears or tickle him under his chin. As he rubs up against her leg, he immediately starts purring very loudly. With a contented meow, he allows her to pick him up.
As she carries him off to bed for a cuddle and a sleep, he nuzzles her cheek.
