“Drive!” Dolen shouts at Victor, who peels away just as Dolen barely makes it into the relative safety of the car.
Dolen leans over to pull the door shut, smells the burning rubber, and flinches as shattered glass from the rear windshield sprinkles down from the lone bullet that manages to hit the car.
“Fuck, man!” Victor yells. “You alright?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Dolen responds between gasps. “Just go.” He leans back in the backseat and tries to calm down.
“I just hope this thing is worth it.” Victor checks the rearview.
“500k is worth it.”
“What even is it?”
“Don’t know. Looks strange though.”
“Is it a bomb? I don’t want to help no terrorists.”
“Fuck.” Dolen slides the cube out of the bag and looks at the strange symbols and self turning dials.
“Oh fuck!” Dolen exclaims.
“What is it?”
“It’s starting to glow!”
“Make it stop then! Make it stop!”
“I can’t!” Dolen spins and inspects the cube in a panic.
A flash of green lights up the night.
Dolen stands before a strange cube in a glass case.
He lifts the case, and an alarm sounds.
Dolen jams the cube into his bag and sprints outside.
“Drive!”

When I first saw him sitting on the wall, relaxed and looking out over the water, I was sure he wasn't a local. Not including children, there are only about 250 or 300 of us in this area full-time, though that number is ten-fold in the summer, and I know everyone at least by sight or by family resemblance. And yet, the way he sat looked familiar and started my mind sorting and discarding among the families I knew, not quite like this one, not quite like that one.

Why did she kill her own baby?
Marisa stood in shock in the bathroom as she stared at the home kit pregnancy test. She was pregnant. She suspected as much when she had missed her period. When she and her boyfriend Dex had sex about a month ago, they had not taken any precautions. She wasn't on the pill anymore because they had stopped having sex when he broke up with her saying she was being too clingy and controlling. Then he showed up at her apartment door, telling her how much he had missed her and how much he loved her and before she knew it they were going at it with what she thought was the best make-up sex of her life. So when she didn't get her period about a week ago, she suspected it. Something was different about the way she felt. It wasn't just a late period. That amazing night of make-up sex had created a baby.
