Choice

This was the problem. What could he do?

The room was dark, and the door was locked. He thought there was a key.

He needed a light, but he could not see the light switch. He had a torch, but the battery fell out, and he didn't know where it had rolled. Without light he couldn't find the key and let himself out, but he needed to find the battery before he could use the torch.

The other problem is that once he used the torch, THEY would know he was in this room and would come for him, but if he didn't find the battery and use the torch to look for the key, then he could not leave the room.

He was damned if he found the battery and used the torch and damned if he didn't.
