She had always been good to the villagers, helped them when they needed her aid. She healed the sick, helped the crops grow for the harvest, and helped people find things they had lost.

The children loved it when she read them stories.

Six months ago, that all changed. The new village council (all men) decided that she was practising witchcraft and should therefore be banished from the village.

Not only that, they contacted all the villages within a hundred miles to shun her as well, so she was truly exiled. When the council were questioned by the villagers and children, they said anyone asking about the Witch would be thrown into the jailhouse. They stopped asking.

So it had come to this.

In the forest, she gathered her friends, the owls and the ravens, to begin the ceremonial chant. She was a god-fearing lady, so called to the Dies Irae to punish the Village Council and replace them with someone who was basically sensible rather than bigoted, misogynistic and ignorant.

The Ceremony commenced and lasted til dawn. The people of the village heard the commotion in the forest, and some knew that the Witch was conducting a ceremony which would benefit the village.

Dies Irae knew the Witch was a good woman, and within a day, the Village Council were struck with dysentery and halitosis, making it impossible to leave their homes or congregate with others. The Dies Irae made this permanent so they would never cause harm again.

The villagers voted in a new council of women and men who invited the Witch to be a member as well, which she declined but said she would support them with her sage advice and knowledge.

The village had their good Witch back and the children had their storyteller back, and the Dies Irae just remained angry with the misogynists and bigots.

Happiness was restored to the village.
