Introduction

Cape’s Edge, a northern Michigan small town founded back in the 1600’s. It became a haven for freed slaves and African witches fleeing from the witch trials. Over time it became a predominantly black owned town. Thriving for several decades as witches were allowed to practice openly and helped move the town along. While its origins may seem more wholesome, another part of its history is more grime. Dark. In the early 1700’s, a group of vicious settlers came, and a war broke out over territory that devastated the town, turning it to ruin. Many lives on both ends were lost. For centuries following, the town became known for strange occurrences, disappearances, and general weirdness. Most people say that the town is haunted. Littered with the souls of the murdered freed slaves and witches, who cursed the land with their blood. Others say the weirdness in the area dates back longer than the towns founding and may be due to something underneath the ground. A dark energy that can cause chaos, destruction, and death. Despite all that, nowadays, most of the town is relatively normal. Not much happens here. At least not on the surface.

Back in the 50’s, a corporate laboratory was built known as Guild Corp. They employed many of the town’s people and eventually grew to be the largest commercial company in town; their brand expanding beyond pharmaceutical and into electronics, food, security, and many other areas. They employed the police station and have kept the town safe since. Not much is known about those in power at the company, but one family particularly has been in charge since they arrived at Cape’s Edge. The Carrieda family. Five generations so far. The lab is relatively normal too. The workers come in, work, and go home. Nothing special.

Trevor and Adrian, two best-friends from the town, happen to back home for the summer. They met each other when they were 15. They met online, like most kids who didn’t go to school together at the time did, and they hit it off. They found common interests in practically everything. Even the small random things they both thought were only their own. Over time, their relationship blossomed. They spent most of their time together, eventually going off to college together and spending the entire two years away. Now that they’re back, they get to see their families and friends. But something’s different. Both between them, the town, and their loved ones. Is it just that it’s their first year back home? Or is that same dark energy that Cape’s Edge is “known” for, attaching itself to everything around them?

Chapter 1: Welcome to Cape's Edge

A sign reads, “Cape’s Edge, Michigan - Welcome to Cape’s Edge: Town of the Cape’s Edge Badgers. Population 9, 479.” It’s nighttime, in the middle of nowhere. The moon is out. A man is walking along the side of the long outer city road. As he’s walking, he hears a sound. He turns around. Nothing. He turns back and walks faster. Almost frustrated. He’s wearing a jacket. Holding himself, visibly cold. He looks down at his phone with a text from someone named Jazmin “I’ll be there in 10 minutes”. It shows the text was received 45 minutes ago. “I can’t believe this.” He’s still walking. The moon continues to shine down. A growl is heard. This time the sound sends a chill down his spin. He turns slow. Something is standing in front of him this time. He screams and runs down the road. “HELP!’ as he’s running the sound of the beast gets more vicious. Is it a wolf? Suddenly something claws him from behind sending him forward. A woman is driving down the road on her phone. “Please, I told his ass next time he rushes me, I’m just gonna take my time. I don’t know who he thinks he i…” suddenly the guy’s head comes crashing through the windshield and lands on the passenger seat. She swerves and stops. Screaming. The sound of a wolf is heard in the distance and a drone with the words “Guild Crop” is shown flying away.

“April 27th, 2019

Dear journal,

“Someone” for everyone, right? That’s what they say. But isn’t that just a fairytale? I mean, let’s face it, hard fact… 7 billion people on the planet. Harder fact, half of them are men, rounding but still… and even harder fact…maybe half of those are gay, maybe. Okay, I’m probably jumping through hoops with that one, but the odds don’t look too good. But then again, when it comes to love… when have odds ever really been in my favor anyway?”

.... to be continued.
