On a lonely country road, the dark was shattered by a blinding flash of light. The craft appeared as if from nowhere. It landed in a clearing separated from the road by a line of trees. A door opened in the center of the craft. Four humanoids exited the craft.

The creatures were thin with elongated necks and arms, they had no ears and their eyes were large black pools. They had mouths but no vocal cords because they communicated telepathically. Two of the creatures headed for the road, where they spread roofing nails. The two greys by the craft set up the bait.

The party was going great, Brad’s brother finally found a woman desperate enough to marry him. Brad was getting drunk and flirting with a co-worker of his brother when Janet grabbed him by the arm and pulled him away from the redhead.

“Stop flirting with your co-workers, I want to go home.” Brad looked at his wife of five years. Janet was a good-looking blond in her early thirties. She would have been a good wife, but she had a habit of nagging and Brad was never able to please her. Brad stepped out on her at every opportunity.

Janet nagged all the way to the car, Brad tried to ignore his wife as he sped down the road, but Janet distracted him enough, so he missed their exit and ended up on a dark back road. “I told you to pay attention, you drunken ass,” Janet screamed.

Brad turned to her and raised his hand, but stopped when the tires of the car hit the roofing nails. Brad lost control as the car left the road and landed in a ditch. Brad and Janet were facing down because the car was at an angle.

“Are you okay?” Brad asked as he unclasped his seatbelt and reached for Janet. Janet slapped his hand away as she sobbed uncontrollably. “Fine, excuse me for caring,” Brad screamed as he tried to open the driver's side door. The door was stuck, so he climbed out the window and limped to the passenger door to help his wife out of the car.

Together they staggered to the road, there was no noise, except for the chirping of crickets and the burps of toads. “I shouldn’t have drunk so much,” Brad said as he and Janet looked around to get their bearings.

Brad saw a bright green light at the end of a trail that led into the woods by the road. “That light is kind of out of place, but if there’s light there are people, I think we should see if we can get help.”

Janet nodded and followed Brad as they crossed the road and headed into the forest staggering toward the light.

Two of the greys were in the cigar-shaped craft, one monitored the trail from a video feed while the other grey made preparations. The other two greys waited outside to welcome Brad and Janet.

They were a hive-mind, so they all knew at once when Brad and Janet entered the clearing. They waited until Brad and Janet were too close to run away before they greeted them.

Brad was the first to see the grey standing by the cigar-shaped craft. “What the Hell.” He screamed, as he grabbed Janet’s hand and turned to head back to the road, but their way was blocked by the two greys.

Brad and Janet froze, Janet whimpered while Brad shook with fear. They didn’t notice the blood from their wounds. Brad was bleeding from a deep gash on his head from hitting the dashboard when they crashed, while Janet was bleeding from the ears.

One of the greys opened a bag it was carrying, it took out a roll of gauze and a bottle of pills, it then beckoned Brad and Janet to the entrance of the cigar-shaped craft. “We can’t go in there,” Brad said as Janet retched up her dinner from the party.

“We need help Brad; it looks like it wants to help us.” Janet retched again and moaned in pain. “I think I have a concussion, we’re both hurt, we’ll die out here, I think we have to take a chance.”

Brad’s bladder loosened as he and Janet followed the grey inside the craft. The couple was led to two tables, the greys helped them on the tables where they laid down. Neither Brad nor Janet was conscious when the grey injected them with a narcotic, it wouldn’t be good for them if Brad and Janet woke up too early.

In no time at all Brad and Janet’s bodies were prepared. The greys weren’t sure about cooking times, so they experimented and took notes, the survival of their species depended on their research.

Several hours later, the greys compared notes, The bitter taste of the humans didn’t sit well with them, and the greys all had a bad case of gas. They decided that humans were not tasty enough, and they caused too much gas.

The greys cleaned out their craft, it took a while to get rid of the smell, then they took off looking for a suitable food source for their dying planet.

Brad and Janet’s death redeemed a life of jealousy and bitterness. Neither one of them would have appreciated that their deaths saved the human race, because they tasted terrible.
