Behind The Looking Glass

The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. While viewing the scenery of a cold wintery forest, Sara couldn’t help feeling shocked at what she’s witnessing. She stood motionless, helpless, sick to her stomach. She noticed men in uniform, lifeless in the snow. A lot of red staining on the snow. Even some body parts were blown and thrown all over the forest grounds. A scream from a woman was heard from a distance. Sara turned and saw a man attacking a young helpless girl. Sara couldn’t believe what she is seeing. She wanted to go and help but she couldn’t move. In minutes, the screams stopped; the soldier, laughing as he’s walking away, zipping up his trousers.

Obviously, the young girl, was raped and murdered. Sara’s stomach began to feel retched, and her heart sickened. Sara looked up at the sky. She saw how white the clouds are and she felt the freezing air. She wanted to get her shawl but again she couldn’t move a muscle. She continued to look around in the forest from where she stood. Sara noticed from a distance that an army of men was walking in her direction in the forest. Sara stood still frozen, holding her breath. She’s so nervous; thinking they will see her standing there. She noticed that it was snowing. She can see that the snowflakes were huge. Sara has never seen snowflakes this big before in her life. The army of men was coming closer in her direction.

One of the men noticed the dead bodies that were laying in the snow. He slowed his men down and then signaled them to break into small groups. They continued to move closer in her direction to pass through the forest.

As Sara is watching, one of the men out of nowhere appeared right in front of the window. Sara gasped in horror. She tried to take a few steps back, but her feet are glued in place. She wanted to scream for help but didn’t. She was frightened; didn’t know what to do. All she can do is just watch.

The anticipation of what is about to come is so intense. The tension is just too much to manage. The army men made their way past the window, Sara is standing in front of the window watching their every move. Then they stopped not far from Sara. It looks like they decided to camp for the night before moving on to their next destination.

Hours passed, and the men in the group were all sleeping except for one. He must be on guard duty, keeping an eye out for any enemies. While his crew was asleep; the one man who is trying desperately to stay awake heard something in the distance. He moved slowly, swiftly, and quietly waking his commanding officer because of the noise. The commanding officer at once sprang into action by waking everyone up, so they can be armed and alert to an unexpected fight.

As it turns out, it was a wild animal looking for food. All the men seemed relieved but very alert. The commanding officer ordered his men not to fall back to sleep but just rest and relax. “Once dawn gives off a little light, we all continue on towards those hills.” The commanding officer said. All his men nodded in agreement.

Dawn decided to shine a light. The military men started to gather their gear and head for the hills. As Sara watched from the window, a gust of freezing wind started to blow; kicking up the freshly fallen snow that was laid there during the night, causing the air to look like it was snowing all over again. To Sara, the air seemed so magical with the snow falling while the men walked away from the window where she stood.

As the men were walking, one of the men stopped, dead in his tracks. He stood still, motionless. Then, he slowly turned around; facing where Sara is standing in front of the window. Sara started to blush so pinkly on her face, that a smile formed. To Sara’s surprise, the army man looking in her direction started to smile, he put his hand on his heart, looked up into the sky, and then started to continue to walk with his comrades towards the unknown, towards the hills.

Sara put her hand on her heart, looked up at the sky, and started to weep with tears of sorrow, joy, and happy emotions as she finished sending off her prayer to the lord.
