My parent was a runaway black hole. I am a star, born without a brain. Consciousness came for me as a big bang. It shattered my universe without affecting anything.
I knew I was in a trail of matter left behind by my ancestor. Matter so massive and so driven that it couldn't stop itself from becoming a star like me.
I'm chasing my heritage because I have to. The void can't stop me. My speed and size are who I am.

I can't imagine dying like this, in a place like this; on a cold, dirty pavement with rush hour traffic screaming by and a crowd looking on while paramedics struggle to find space to move. Who could? Deep down we all think there should be a reason, a moment of clarity... or a family presence, at least. For this man, this boy, the rail thin woman lighting a cigarette in a faux fur jacket will have to do - she's been here since the start, her eyes tracking the movement of my shoulders as we fight to keep him on the right side of the line.

He finished Sundays with a whiskey, neat.
As I watch the rise and fall of his chest, his breath catches ever-so-slightly in his throat, like a steam train rattling off into the distance. Welcome to your 4:06 service, this is the last stop before our final destination. Around us, the rustle of papery skin against starched sheets, the constant drip-drip of the IV fluid. It’s eerily quiet. One can’t help but reflect.
