"It's a new day, a new life." She said her arms spread wide as if she was trying to embrace the horizon. They'd stopped the cherry red BMW at the top of the hill overlooking the valley they were running from. It was an incredibly beautiful view but all Tony could think was how they'd ended up like this. 'With this new life.' He stared at SueAnn, her short bleach blonde hair held back by a few hair clips. The bruises were just starting to show and both her lip and eye were fairly bad looking.

Tony could still remember kicking her out of his treehouse because 'no girls allowed' when they were kids. They'd been so close growing up. Best friends. The day she'd pulled up in the passengers seat of Donny's old Chevy pickup truck he would never forget. Tony could never figure out why she'd gone out with him to begin with. Everyone in town knew what a piece of shit he was. But he'd been good looking and had a little money, which was a big deal in there little town.

A loud noise like a shotgun startled him. Tony jumped up and looked around thinking it was the police, coming to put an end to it all. But it was just a tree snapping and settling in the cold summer evening.

What if the cops do catch up? Tony though. Not really if but when. Were they going to be running the rest of there life's? Tony didn't care if it was for SueAnn he'd run forever. He could still hear her voice on the other end of the phone crying. She'd told him how bad Donny was that day. That he'd been drinking a lot and she was scared. Really scared. Without a second thought he'd gone to there house to put a stop to it. Tony knew what he was going to do as soon as he'd hung up. He was going to kill that son of a bitch. He'd unlocked his gun case and pulled out his colt revolver and a box of slugs. Then grabbed his keys and all his cash a change or so of clothes then left.

Tony lived in a little trailer on the edge of town. He spent all his time working and all his money on his car and guns. SueAnn and her husband Donny lived in a little shithole in a crapy part of town. What money Donny'd had he'd either gambled or drank away. It was about half hour drive. Tony gunned it and got there in fifteen. He could hear SueAnn crying and Donny screaming from outside the house. "I'm going to kill you this time SueAnn I swear!" Tony tried the front door and it was unlooked. Silently her crept into the house, his gun cocked and ready to go. He'd found them in the kitchen. SueAnn was cowering in the corner by the refrigerator, blood all over her face. Donny was waving his gun. "You made me do this!" Tony slunk around the corner and aimed his colt. "Why were you calling Tony you stupid bitch? It's all your fau…" He didn't get a chance to finish screaming at her. In fact he'd never scream at SueAnn again.

The slug had entered the back of his scull and passed though. SueAnn didn't scream she just stared at Donny's body. "Get up and get your things we need to leave." Slowly she pushed herself up and went to get the things she'd need. Neither of them said anything as they left the house and stared to drive. After about half hour of silence SueAnn asked. "Do you have any idea where we're going?" Tony just shook his head. "No." He glanced at her then back to the road. "Does it matter anymore SueAnn?" She shook her head. "No, I suppose not." It was quite for another half hour. "I knew what you were going to do when I called you."

"I know." And that was all that needed to be said.

SueAnn came running back to the car. "We probably should keep moving." She said then smiled at him. Despite everything Tony smiled back.
