𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔯𝔪𝔶 𝔑𝔦𝔤𝔥𝔱 𝔗𝔢𝔯𝔯𝔬𝔯

This is a true story, but true as I remember it, so it may well be a figment of my imagination. I used to live in a fifteenth-century farmhouse that my mum and dad rescued from dereliction. It had been visited by Oliver Cromwell, who executed two monks there, so an ideal place for supernatural occurrences.

My room was at the back, and there was a huge storm outside. I had woken up for some reason and was sure that there was someone or something in the room with me, but I could not move; I had some kind of night paralysis, and I was scared.

My mum said she had heard footsteps when there was no one else in the house, and once she saw a cowled monk come down the stairs and walk out of the back door (without opening the door).

Was the thing in my room one of Cromwell's murdered monks? They were a father and son called Edward Young.

Then all of a sudden, the window flew open and hit the outside wall but didn't smash. This was a shock because the window was painted shut and had never been opened since the room became mine.

That broke my paralysis. I switched on my light, and there was nothing there.

That has stayed with me throughout my life, and in my childhood it was something that sometimes made me worry about going to bed.
