Today's decorating trends are all about doing it yourself and while hanging plants and frills are great for decor, they may not always be practical. But what if you could make the things that you needed to create a functional and homely space? In this DIY guide, we look at the practical side of making your own things and how basic design strategies can improve your daily living.
How to Organize Your Living Spaces
Organization is all about reducing clutter and when you have places to safely store your belongings, then clutter is removed and you're more organized.
A DIY hack for creating storage is using a pegboard. While you can't pack large and heavy items on a pegboard, the accessories you can attach to the board make it easier to hold a variety of items from keys and tumblers to phones and jewelry.
No longer is the pegboard reserved for tools in the garage. You can find a variety of designs from plastic and wood to stainless steel boards to complement the current decor of your interior. Stainless steel will last the longest but plastic is also a durable option and requires little maintenance.
Once you have chosen your board, it can be designed to serve different purposes.
i). Storage
While pegboard was previously thought of as hardware for placing and hanging tools, its neat appearance and easy use make it ideal as a storage and a decorative piece. In the above image, the pegboard looks great on the wall of an office. With its abundance of accessories including hooks and clips, you can add a variety of items and keep it offer the counters. These boards can easily be hung in the bedroom, kitchen, office, or bathroom.
ii). Decorative
Who would have thought about using pegboard for decoration? You can find pegboard in a variety of colors or you can paint it using metallic or chalk paint. These colors will instantly brighten the space and act as a canvas for decorating. Use real (dried) or synthetic flowers, little storage boxes, and jewelry to decorate. You can also place these boards in the kitchen and hang drying towels or utensils on hooks.
This simple and inexpensive board is only limited by your imagination.
A Simple Box for Storage
Most small homes and small apartments lack storage. It is one of the biggest headaches living in less square footage. But if you can create storage with neat boxes that are easily tucked away, then you can place most of your valuables in these containers and off the floor. But instead of buying a box or new furniture, you can make your own from wood crates, baskets, and gift boxes.
Wood crates such as pallets can be taken apart and the wood slats put together to make wooden boxes of different sizes. Sand it down and varnish it or paint it for an attractive finish. You can visit Making a DIY Wooden Box to learn more!
Old baskets can also be used to store items. Place the basket on top of a chest or shelf and add goodies inside the basket for decoration. --+
Multiple Shelving Units
Stack floating shelves to provide extra storage. While you need to ask your landlord's permission for adding shelves, you can easily invest in some shelving to place your goods.
Not only is DIY about saving money, but it is also about thinking of ways to reuse and repurpose. Not only will you be adding a unique feature to your home but you'll also be doing your part to reduce waste while improving your practical living.
