We all enjoy an excellent drama on television. We may be following a serial drama and keep watching episode after episode.

People do like dramas for various reasons. I could share a few of my reasons:

1. Entertainment

Dramas are designed to be entertaining. They often feature compelling storylines and intriguing conflicts and keep us in suspense about the outcome.

I like police stories, investigative stories, and any stories that keep me guessing who is the mastermind, good guy or bad guy. Stories like these keep me awake and motivate me to return for the next episode.

I’m not fond of horror shows because I do not find them entertaining. They scared me and made me imagine things in the dark. But I know some of you like them because you enjoy them.

Also, I’m not too fond of comedy dramas because I sometimes find them unrealistic and silly. Of course, some people would enjoy them.

I’m not fond of dramas that make the audience guess the closing story. I need a nice ending to enjoy the whole show. The scriptwriter finds it enjoyable to make the audience think about the outcome, but I do know how to appreciate that.

2. Identification with characters in the show

Sometimes, viewers find they can identify with certain characters in dramas with whom they can identify or empathise. This connection can make the story more relatable and will emotionally resonate with us.

For example, I learn more about doctors when I watch a drama about doctors. A few weeks ago, I watched a drama on Chinese physicians, and I learned so much from their experience and story.

We cannot become another character overnight, but watching a drama about that character gives us an insight into their life and story.

Of course, the stories could be exaggerated and unrealistic, but it gives us a moment to identify with another personality.

3. Escapism

Watching dramas can provide us with a temporary escape from the stress and demands of real life. It allows viewers to immerse themselves in a different world.

Escapism is helpful to help us manage our stress. Modern living has many stresses. For example, if you are married with children, you face the stress of managing your children. If you are unemployed, you face the stress of finding the money for your livelihood.

Hence, when you are captivated by the drama, all your worries are lifted for at least an hour!

4. Storytelling

People are naturally drawn to storytelling. Television dramas are a medium for conveying narratives, and humans have a deep-rooted fascination with stories.

Stories can be imagined, and the more suspense the story can create, the better. For example, it could be a story of time travel into the past or some supernatural arena.

We know it is impossible in real life, but in dramas, it is possible.

5. Suspense and tension

Dramas frequently incorporate suspense, tension and plot twists. I like this best when, sometimes, the bad guy turns out to be the good guy, and the good guy is a bad guy.

Also, in thriller stories, we want to know who the mastermind is. Often, the story evolves in a narrative that we would not expect.

In such dramas, it keeps the audience coming back for more. The sense of anticipation can be quite satisfying because we all are curious about the story’s outcome.

Final thoughts

In summary, our enjoyment of a good drama is rooted in the combination of entertainment, emotional engagement, relatability and many other elements that make up a well-crafted drama.

Sometimes, I wonder how the scriptwriter thinks of a story’s twists and plots. Could they be inspired when a dream awakens them at night, or maybe a nightmare?

Maybe that’s one way they could think of an impossible story to write.
