"What's The Worst Thing Your Mother's Ever Done To You?"

This is the question I asked on my Facebook page to over 1.1k followers. I didn't expect the slew of responses that I received (thank you by the way to every single person who responded. I will share each and every one of your stories at one point or another).

In the midst of all the stories, one story in particular really hit me hard because I simply couldn't believe what I was reading.

The writer doesn't want her face or identity revealed (for obvious reason as you will soon see) was okay with me sharing her first name as the person to whom the story belongs to: Sylvia.

For storytelling purposes, I have re-written the story in a way that reads better. The story itself is unchanged, but because the discussion we had was through DMs on Facebook with a lot of questions and answers, I had to consolidate everything Sylvia told me into one clean story.

Are you ready to read Sylvia's unimaginable story? Then let's dive in.

Sylvia's Story.

I knew my mom didn't like tattoos. That one I knew. But still, it doesn't forgive what she did.

Okay so I went to university abroad and one day my friends and I decided to go out for a night of fun. It was normal things. Drinking, clubbing, dancing. But then at one point during the night, one of the girls decided that we should all go out and get matching tattoos. I swear I don't know what I drank that night but for some reason I said, "Okay, let's do it." We went to the tattoo parlor and I got a tiny tattoo. Very very small, under my sideboob. Extremely tiny tattoo.

The next morning, I woke up and immediately knew I had made a mistake. All through the rest of the semester, all I could do was panic and worry about what my mom would say. One of my friends told me that since the tattoo was so small and right under my side boob, there should be no reason as to why she would see it as long as I'm wearing a shirt. So I decided when I went back home for holiday in Nigeria, that I'd just wear a shirt for the duration of my stay.

One day, I don't know what happened. I don't know. I don't know how I forgot about the tattoo or how I got too comfortable in the house, but right inside the house, I wore a sports bra. Inside my house. When my mother was there.

Then I went to the kitchen where my mother was cooking. She was frying beef and I was trying to help around the kitchen with the other things that she was making. When I rose my hand up to reach inside the kitchen cabinet, I heard my mother let out a loud scream. I was so startled and I turned to look at her. When I saw the way her face was looking under my bra, I immediately remembered my tattoo and I froze.

I kid you not, I completely froze. I didn't know what to say, I didn't know what to do, so I just stood there. Staying completely still, saying completely nothing.

My mother was mad! The woman has a very hot temper, she does. This is a woman who has on multiple occasions, almost gotten into physical fights with traffic control. She doesn't play. So that day when I watched her blaring and screaming, I just didn't know what to say or how to respond because how was I possibly going to justify this one.

She kept on shouting and I guess my silence was annoying her because she started shouting "Am I not talking to you? Will you answer me?" and I just didn't know what to say.

That's when it happened.

The next thing I knew, my mother grabbed the frying pan from the stove and struck me. Right under my breast where the tattoo had been. The hot oil and beef scattered all over the floor, some of the oil also burnt my leg.

I screamed! Jide, I say I SCREAMED. That kind of pain, I've never felt it before. It was like my skin was getting hotter every second, then the burn was also peppering me yet itching at the same time.

To her credit, immediately she realized what she did, she shouted and quickly opened a waterproof bag of flour and started throwing it on the burn.

But still, it didn't do too much. The burn has healed now but there is still such a prominent scar there. I can't wear many things I liked to wear before: sports bras, crop tops. I've become more self-conscious of my body in public places and even in private spaces when people want to take off my clothes.

I'm still trying to forgive my mom, God knows I'm trying. But it's very difficult because sometimes I feel like what she did was deliberate. Of everywhere the frying pan could hit, it had to be right where my tattoo was? I don't think it was an accident. But I am trying to forgive her. Although having a physical reminder of what my own mother did to, it's really hard to forgive. It's really hard.
