I have been a first time mother for two months now, and have tried both ways to feed my baby: breastfeeding and formula bottle feeding. Unfortunately, I ended up in the ER due to severe food poisoning, which resulted in me having to take antibiotics that stopped me from being able to breastfeed. This meant that my baby had to switch to just being formula fed, which was okay, since I was breastfeeding and formula feeding her anyway.

However, when it comes to formula feeding, there are a few challenges along the way. First, there are different types of nipple tops for the bottles, as well as different levels, and many bottle brands to choose from. So how do you know which one is most suitable for your baby? So far, my partner and I have tested out three different brands on our baby and found the best brand that has a steady milk flow and makes formula feeding a smoother experience.

Tommee Tipee anti-colic bottle

Tommee Tippee

Tommee Tippee is a popular brand in Europe, and we were gifted the Tommee Tippee Anti-Colic bottles, as well as the normal ones. When our baby was a newborn, the smaller bottles were suitable for her and the 'level 1' nipple tops were suitable for a fast milk flow, since newborns are hungrier and can drink quicker. However, as she turned 2 months old she started to get fussy, cried alot during her feedings and would spit up milk. We were really worried, and after consulting with a doctor about it, they recommended to switch the nipple tops to 'level 2'.

We did this, but the problem still occurred. It was still producing a fast milk flow, which she struggled to handle, and it would make feeding stressful for the both of us.

Therefore, I would only recommend Tommee Tippee as a newborn starter bottle for express milk or milk formula, but not for the later months if your baby needs to drink at a slower pace, or has silent acid reflux.

Dr.Brown's Anti-Colic bottle

Dr.Brown's

Dr.Brown's is a popular brand, especially in the U.S, and they have Anti- Colic bottles too. These bottles are taller, and can hold more milk, making it suitable for all ages.

They also have small nipple tops, which helped our baby latch on to it strongly. It had a smooth milk flow, which helped, since the milk flow wasn't too fast. However, she would still spit up milk, or there would be milk spillage during the feeding sessions.

Another problem that we faced when we started using the bottles was the small sized opening of the top of the bottles, making it hard to put in the scoops of formula quickly. If you compare the Dr.Brown's bottle to the Tommee Tippee bottle, the Tommee Tippee bottle has a wider sized opening at the top, which made it easy for us to make the formula quickly, whereas the opening for the Dr.Brown's bottle is smaller, so you'd have to be more careful not to make a mess.

This means that the most viable option for this would be to make the formula in advance, or to find the right timing to make the formula just before your baby would get too fussy and hungry for a feeding session.

Double Heart nipple top and Bebe;on bottle

Double Heart nipple top and Bebe;on bottle

Double Heart and Bebe;on are both popular brands in South Korea. Even though Double Heart has its own bottle designs, the nipple tops can be used with other bottles too. Hence why we bought the Bebe;on bottle, because the design itself is highly rated, and we used the Double Heart nipple tops for these bottles.

This was our final try, since we had already used the two previous brands to try to create the smoothest and most stress-free feeding session for our baby. The Double Heart nipple top has a unique design that is wide, but not as wide as the Tommee Tippe brand. Our baby latched onto it strongly, and was able to drink at a slow and steady pace. What we loved about these two brands is that during the feeding sessions there was no milk spillage, and she didn't spit up the milk too!

However, since the Double Heart nipple top is designed for a slow milk flow, this means that more time is spent during the feeding session, and it would take longer for her to finish the bottle. But, our baby did finish the bottle without crying and making any fuss. That means that our problem was solved, and we finally found the right match for our baby.
