The UK's longest serving monarch has died. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral Castle on the afternoon of Thursday 8th September. The late queen died aged ninety six after being on the throne for seventy years.

There has been a huge outpouring of grief, not only from people around the UK but also from people who live in many countries around the Commonwealth and elsewhere as during her seventy year, Queen Elizabeth II travelled to many countries around the globe where she took part in many events and met several people.

Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, aged 27, in front of a then-record TV audience estimated at more than 20 million people.

Subsequent decades would see great change, with the end of the British Empire overseas and the Swinging '60s sweeping away social norms at home.

Due to the length of time, she has reigned, she will have been the only queen that many people in the UK will have known, having taken to the throne in 1952 after the death of her father.

Her son King Charles III will now assume the role of king and conduct many of the duties that his mother took part in.

He said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world.

He said: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."

There will now be a coming period of mourning in which the family would be comforted and sustained by the knowledge of the respect and deep affection the queen had widely held around the world.

The new king and his wife Camilla, now the queen consort returned to Buckingham Palace in London on Friday where he is expected to address the nation following the death of his mother.

A number of senior members of the Royal Family gathered in Balmoral after the queen's doctors became concerned for her health. She was then placed under medical supervision for a number of hours until she passed away in the afternoon. Prince William and his brother Prince Harry were also at the gathering.

Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday, said the monarch was the rock on which modern Britain was built, who had "provided us with the stability and strength that we needed".

Speaking about the new King, she said: "We offer him our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much, to so many, for so long.

"And with the passing of the second Elizabethan age, we usher in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country, exactly as Her Majesty would have wished, by saying the words 'God save the King'."

Queen Elizabeth II reign included fifteen prime ministers which began with Winston Churchill born in 1874 and included present prime minister Ms Liz Truss who was born a hundred and one years later in 1975.

The official confirmation notice of the queen's death was placed on the gates of Buckingham Palace where large crowds were gathering. The flag on top of the palace was also lowered to half-mast as a sign of respect. People from around the world have been coming to the palace to lay flowers and pay their last respects as the late queen will have been someone they have known and loved for many years.
