It can be hard to be a single parent. You have to work to support your children, yet you also have to be the one person that they can count on. They are going to look to you for everything that they need. You are going to want to give them everything that you can, but it doesn't always seem like enough.

One of your biggest concerns may be about where you are going to live. You may be happy renting, though many feel like that is just wasting money. You may not feel like you can afford to buy a home, but it is possible to do so on one income.

Here are some tips for buying a home as a single parent.

Check your credit. Before you even think about looking at homes, you need to figure out how healthy your credit score is. It is going to have to be really high if you want to buy a home with one income. Because of this, you may want to spend a few months working on your credit before you buy a home.

Be realistic. You need to be very realistic when you get started. You need to know how much money you have and how much you are able to spend on a mortgage. If you are lucky enough to get child support, you may want to see how much you can afford without that. If something happens and your support changes, you don't want to struggle to pay your bills if you don't get child support every month.

Come up with a budget. A budget will help you stay on track (and let you know how much you can really pay each month toward your home). Make sure that you include grocery money, your car insurance, and other bills that you have to pay.

Remember, a house is more than a mortgage. The simple truth is that you won't just be paying a mortgage every month. You are going to be in charge of the utilities, such as water, electricity, and more. These can all add up (quickly) so it is important that you really think before you write a contract on a house.

You are also going to want to budget for home repairs. Things will break, and you are going to have to fix them. You don't want to have to reach for your credit cards every time that something goes wrong.

Get pre-approved before you start looking. If you get pre-approved, you are simply getting the home buying process started. It will allow you to know how much you can spend on a home. However, just because you get pre-approved for a certain amount doesn't mean that you should buy a home that high. It just gives you a place to start.

Get a home inspection. Though you may not want to spend the extra money, you should never skip a home inspection. You need to know what you are walking into! You don't want to buy a home only to find out that you are going to have to replace the windows and the roof right away!

Though you might be overwhelmed with all of your bills, you might still be able to buy a home for yourself and your children. While it might not be as grand as you had hoped, it is still going to be your children's home. You just need to think carefully and plan ahead before you get started. Take a look at your budget and see what you can afford to pay for the mortgage. Don't forget about the other costs. You don't want to buy a home, only to realize that you can't afford the upkeep!
