The Secret Fortune

This story is partially inspired by my own life around the time by grandfather passed away and left me with a lot of money.

Fiona was a young girl who had recently discovered the death of her grandfather. She had been put in his will as an heir and was set to meet up with her family to discuss what was to be given to each of them. Fiona knew little of her grandfather from the time they spent together, but had always had fond memories of those times. She would soon discover her grandfather wasn’t exactly who she’d expected him to be.

She got given gifted an old suitcase, that seems extraordinarily curious to her, as it seemed like an odd thing to be giving her. After searching though the cases content, she found out her grandfather worked as a British spy in the Nazi regime and was frequently being put in danger and at his own peril during the second world war. In the case she found some old photos of him using various spy equipment, including a parachute. He looked devilishly handsome in his younger year’s and Fiona could see how his grandmother could have easily fallen for him.

The most curious artefact she stumbled across however, was a letter explaining the mass to a large fortune he was said to have owned and had written a secret code that must be deciphered in order to find its whereabouts. This seemed quite exciting to her as it felt like she would be going on an adventure to find this supposed lost treasure and it would be a great way to farewell her grandfather by finding it for him.

After spending months trying to crack the code, she eventually figured it out and decided to follow it to it's designated mark. She ended up at the old cemetery where her grandfather had been buried. She noticed there was something particularly about his gravestone. Attached to the side of it was a small canister, she opened it up and found a note inside.

It read "Dearest Fiona, if you've found this note, you stumbled across my secret hidden letter. You've probably discovered by now that I used to be a British spy for the Nazi regime. I never told anyone about my expeditions, so you are the first to learn about it. During my time as a spy i was also able to acquire a significant amount of money, that i was able to steal and return to the UK, due to how dangerous the expedition was, i had to hide it somewhere where no one would find it, so I asked a good friend of mine to set up this arrangement to help you find it, it's hidden in a place that is very special to me and your grandmother and I'm pretty sure I've taken you there a few times. Find this place and you'll find 50,000 pounds worth of money that I hope you can make good use of during your young life, I made this as a last send off to you and the family. I'd wished we could have spent more time together, but the time we did spend together where some of the greatest time of my life and I'm so glad I got to share them with you. All the best, oh and don't forget to bring a shovel, love ya, sweetie"

Fiona began to tear up after reading the last part of the message, she had always enjoyed spending time with her grandfather and he was such a wonderful man, she knew it was going to be hard, never being able to see him again, but she knew it was a good way to send him off. Luckily she still remember the little lake, she used to go to, feeding the ducks bread, with her grandfather. She decided to go late at night when no one else was around and grabbed a shovel from her dad's shed and headed out to the lake.

The note provided a specific location she needed to dig along the bank side. She began digging in the spot, as she turned on her head lamp. It took her several minutes of intense digging, but it eventually yielded a large noise, she reached down and brushed away the dirt. Low and behold was a small box, she grabbed it and pulled it out. She then unbuckled the latch and low and behold a large wad of money stood before her. She was so taken aback, she couldn't believe her grandfather had actually done something like this. She re-potted the hole and headed home. The next day she told her parents what had happened, they were both shocked and amazed to not only learn of her grandfather's secret life, but the fact he had left them such a vast fortune. They'd definitely be well off for awhile.
