The Lasting Impact of a Caring Mentor: Tribute to Ken Mar

It's often said that it takes a village to raise a child, and in many ways, this statement resonates deeply. Parents can't do everything alone, and sometimes it's those outside the family who leave an indelible mark on a child's life. In our own family journey, we were fortunate to cross paths with an exceptional man, Ken Markert, whose influence on the life of my youngest son, Benjamin, was remarkable.

A network of kindness:

In the journey of growing up for my three boys, we were surrounded by a caring tribe of teachers, scout leaders, coaches, and other adults who brought a diversity of perspectives and guidance. Interestingly, among this tribe, biological family members were not at the top of the list. However, each person, whether teacher, scout leader, or neighbor, helped build character and guide my sons into adulthood.

The absence of older generations:

In our case, the nuclear family was geographically distant, with grandparents gone, leaving my sons without a regular presence of older figures. This gap was filled by the relationships built within our community, particularly within our church. Churches, regardless of individual beliefs, often provide a rich support network of surrogate “grandparents,” playing a crucial role in the development of young people.

Ken Markert: A caring and exemplary mentor

Among these seniors was Ken Markert, an exceptional man whose influence on Benjamin's life was profound. Ken selflessly engaged, offering Ben more than just Sunday morning conversations. He taught him practical skills, engaging him in work and guiding him with patience. Ken was a role model who knew how to inspire by example, combining kindness, humor, firmness when necessary, and a flawless work ethic.

The impact on Benjamin's development:

Ken's commitment was not limited to practical lessons, but also included crucial life lessons. He instilled in Ben a sense of responsibility, making sure every task was completed correctly, even if it took multiple attempts. Additionally, Ken gave Ben his first paid work experience, allowing him to earn his own money and learn the value of independence and pride.

Conclusion and tribute:

Today we mourn the loss of Ken Markert, unexpectedly learning of his passing. The pandemic has distanced us from this caring mentor, but his impact on Benjamin's life will remain vivid in our memory. Ken was more than a mentor; he was an understanding guide when my son needed it most. Wherever you are, Ken, go with God, and thank you for the invaluable life lessons you have given our family.

Legacy and life lesson:

Ken's loss leaves a void in our lives, but his legacy will live on. He showed my son that kindness, patience and commitment can have a lasting impact on an individual's development. Ben learned practical skills, but more importantly, he acquired values and work ethic that will guide him throughout his life.

The importance of models outside the family:

Ken and Ben's story highlights the importance of role models outside the biological family in a child's growth. Sometimes a caring mentor can offer a unique perspective and valuable guidance, filling in the gaps that even the most loving parents can't always reach.

A church as a supportive community:

As we discuss the crucial role of the church in our family's lives, it becomes clear that faith communities can play a significant role in providing emotional and moral support to young people. Whether they are believers or not, young people can find supportive figures, advice and positive examples within these communities.

The need for a diversity of models:

Finally, Ben and Ken's story highlights the need for a diversity of role models in a child's life. Each adult brought something unique to my sons' growth, and it was this variety that helped create well-rounded and compassionate individuals.

In conclusion, while we mourn the loss of Ken, we celebrate the rich teachings he left behind. His kindness and dedication had a profound impact on my son's life, and we are forever grateful to have had someone like him in our "village." Go with God, Ken, and thank you for everything.
