Story & Pictures by Lightning, age 9

Once there was a bat named Moon.

Moon had always wanted to learn ballet, but she was too scared to sign up.

However, she had a little black book that she used to write down the dance steps that she saw from behind the vent.

She always looked at the dance class from the window in the ventilation system, because she lived in the dark vents in the dance school...

These dark vents were surprisingly cozy. She had found a little doll seat, and she found a blacklight that was actually purple. She went to her home to think: how would it be to do ballet?

Moon thought that if she could just get into the dance class, she could tell the parakeet her ideas, and they could collaborate. She imagined that she and the parakeet would come up with the flying lift...

Meanwhile, the dance class was practicing for the Nutcracker. Moon finally worked up enough courage to ask if she could join the dance class.

The teacher wasn’t sure at first, because she had never seen a bat want to be in the spotlight before.

But she saw that Moon really wanted to be in the dance class...

Moon told her all about how she was an orphan, and she had no idea who her father was, and how she had always wanted to do ballet and be a dancer. So, the teacher said yes.

During her first day at dance class, she danced with the parakeet, who was the only one who was her size. They practiced the flying lift, and that’s when they came up with the idea to change the Nutcracker. The teacher said “good job,” and to keep going.

All the students got to practice together for a while. Moon practiced on the dance floor that had paw prints, that were for learning steps. The paw prints were white and the ground was pink, so it was really easy to see them...

She practiced ballet for a couple of weeks, and then it was finally the big day. Everybody was going to the stage to get ready. Moon found a doll bow and put it in her hair. The teacher fitted her with a tutu, but she couldn’t get her to wear ballet shoes. There were none that were small enough.

They danced for two hours. During the dance, the fish was rolling all over the stage, and she couldn’t quite get the horse not to step on her. The parakeet lifted Moon up on the stage, and it seemed like she was flying - but it only seemed like it, because she actually knew what it was like to fly.

Since they were both flying creatures the parakeet flew up while the bat was flapping her wings, twirling around so the audience said, “ooh” and “ah” and they all clapped and clapped. Moon never felt so good in her whole entire life. She felt like she could dance on and on, forever...

When they were getting out of their costumes, the Bat King, who had been watching the whole entire performance, came up to Moon, and said: “I am your father.”

Moon was very surprised. And she thought that it was likely. She asked, “why did you leave me at the orphanage, Papa?”

The King said, “a jester wanted to take you and raise you as his own, because he wanted to be the king. So we left you at the orphanage so he could never find you. But now you are dancing the Nutcracker, and we can finally be reunited!”

And, since he was rich, he gave her $20,000 to use as she wished. And they lived happily ever after...

P.S. Moon said goodbye to her friends before going off with her Dad.

The End.
