Feelin' Good
My shrink told me that I wore rose colored glasses throughout my childhood and adult life so that I could, “Create the illusion of mother.”

Each generation has its own twist on the ideal way to live, work and play within the confines of the socioeconomic climate of that time. Some beliefs prevalent years ago have faded into oblivion over the years, abandoned because of functional irrelevance. Gender roles, racial equality and religious beliefs have seen dramatic transformations over the course of history.

My mother is strong, stubborn, and like many Asian mothers, overprotective. My mother moved to the states in her thirties without knowing any English. After living in the United States for thirty years, my mother acclimated to the culture and had often surprised me with her progressiveness. But today wasn’t that day. Today, I called my mother because I wanted to share with her my plans to be engaged with my boyfriend and ask for her blessing. I could hear the panic grow in her voice. She began to shower me with questions.
Tree Cutters
"Alright, Mother!" I shouted, running into the jungle. Joáo was playing catch with his friends. He wasn't paying attention, reaching for a ball and slipped off a ledge; falling almost to his death. Mother is fraught with fear. Finding the Cordoncillo plant before nightfall was my duty. The blue sky had already begun to blend gold. I was racing time.

This song holds significant meaning in my life. This song came out about the time my parents separated. I had always looked up to my dad and admired him until he spanked me really hard and hurt me to the point of not being able to sit down.

It‘s hard to know when you’re around abusive people when it’s become the norm. It happens that often and somehow justified every time it does happen.

It’s taken me fifty eight years to write this story. Fifty eight years of life experiences viewed from the perceptions of a child, a young man, and now an aged and hopefully wiser old man.

In a woman’s life it is often said that there no relationship more important than her relationship with her mother. But that relationship is not always a totally healthy one. Sometimes the relationship is not totally toxic, but it has its moments where there are things that get said that really shouldn’t be said. Little jabs that rip you apart piece by piece and you have no control over it. Now its not all the time, and there are loving moments, so it is not that it’s a toxic relationship, or so you think at the time.

No-one-importantPublished 4 years ago in FamiliesI'm 23 years old and caring for my 14 year old sister
My partner and I have recently become the guardian of my younger sister who is 14 years old. She came to live with my partner and I, 4 months ago, bear in mind we only live in a 1 bedroom flat. There was a lot to deal with at the time and so many emotions where high, she was dealing with the feeling of not being wanted by her own family. She at the time who was 13 years old had a lot of angry and hate towards certain people in her life. She felt unwanted and unloved, which breaks my heart to even think that she thought that.
