As the holiday season unfolds, the United States transforms into a tapestry of diverse traditions, each state weaving its unique thread into the fabric of festive celebrations. In a recent survey of over 2,800 Americans, we find out how families across the country are spending their holidays. This was an interesting study, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of holiday traditions across the nation, and exploring the unique ways in which each state celebrates the most wonderful time of the year.

Average Start Time for Holiday Decorating:

From coast to coast, every state has its own set of cherished traditions that define the holiday season. Whether it's unique decorations, special events, or regional customs, the diversity of these traditions reflects the cultural richness embedded in American communities.

The holiday spirit manifests itself in the glow of twinkling lights and festive decorations. The study asked Americans how early they decorate for Christmas, showcasing which regions embrace the festive spirit the earliest and which ones prefer a more gradual approach.

States that decorate the earliest:

  • Virginia - 5.15 weeks before Christmas
  • Georgia - 5.04 weeks before Christmas
  • Indiana - 4.90 weeks before Christmas

States that decorate the latest:

  • Idaho — 3.23 weeks before Christmas
  • Massachusetts — 3.45 weeks before Christmas
  • Delaware — 3.57 weeks before Christmas

Favorite Holiday Movies and Cocktails:

So many scents and tastes go hand-in-hand with the Holiday season and grabbing your favorite snack or drink to curl up by the fire to watch your favorite Christmas movie is the best way to spend your evenings in December.

According to the survey, “Home Alone”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “A Christmas Story” are America’s favorite Christmas movies

When it comes to enjoying a Holiday beverage, eggnog takes the cake followed by Irish coffee and spiked hot chocolate.

Family Gift Exchanges:

Every family has their own ways of exchanging gifts around Christmas. The survey asked families what their method of gift-giving is and 52% participate in a traditional gift exchange, with everyone buying each other gifts. Some families get creative - 9% do a secret Santa gift exchange and 3% opt for charitable donations instead of gifts.

At the end of the day, the Holidays are about so much more than material gifts and should be focused on building these beloved traditions of watching Christmas movies and decorating the tree together.

The amount spent on gifts also varies by state. The national average according to the survey is $126.38 per person.

The states with the highest Christmas gift spend per person are:

New Jersey - $146.21

Virginia - $139.19

Oregon - $125.88

Rhode Island – $119.20

Pennsylvania – $118.45

The states with the lowest Christmas gift spend per person are:

Idaho - $73.89

Texas - $79.50

Louisiana - $79.83

Hawaii - $80.21
