I can confidently say that nature is a woman and I have heard mother nature as a name numerous times. To a child, nature is a playground, as we grow, it teaches us that everything is a cycle, and it is forever changing.

The life-giving and nurturing aspects of nature qualify it to be feminine. Mother nature has been called this as far back as 1266 CE, it was in Mycenaeane Greek and was a written reference in the 12th or 13 century BC in recognition of the nurturing and replenishing qualities that is feminine like, has attached to nature. They invented nature, seeing her as being created by God, her place laying on the earth, back then in the medieval mind she was no Goddess but a personification.

Nature is just like a mother she uses her powerful teachings through social conflicts as well as dissensions that impair the peace as well as the happiness of mankind to let us know that what we sow we reap.

She is however through her selfless compassion quick to heal, sustain and support all life on earth.

Just like women’s bodies follow cycles, that in the right circumstance can produce life the same can be said of nature.

Reproduction, as well as fertility, has been a symbol of the continuity of nature, like I mentioned earlier mother nature continues in a balanced cycle the same as the life cycle of human beings.

Another reason why the name mother nature stuck is basically that earth is seen to be a parental figure because it sustains us. Allowing us the opportunity to transform our relationship with it. The similarities between women and nature are probably why there is that personal connection between them.

It is however very unfortunate this assumed closeness of women to nature provides a reason for men to view earth and women as being not only available to men but also to accommodate and accept whatever gendered oppression they have to go through.

The beauty of nature is probably another reason why nature is termed a woman, Nature is so beautiful that when we are depressed, oppressed, or sad we opt for ‘getting some fresh air’ which does the magic.

It is a well-known fact that going into the midst of nature has a way of consoling and inspiring one.

There is nothing as comforting as watching nature change its appearance as the weather or the time-of-day changes. Ever revolving, making us accept its beauty just like we accept its harshness.

Nature’s beauty is living, moving, and reproductive. Observing its growth and development is its beauty. Nature is beautiful especially when it provides us with peace and security, something we can relate to motherhood.

The perception of the beauty mother nature bestows on us gives us so much emotional and affective pleasure.

Like a river flowing, does not lose its beauty when in another season or when in another area of the world, frozen, nature always retains its beauty.

Mother nature reveals its beauty at every time and place, it reveals its beauty which is endless, through the Sun and the moon, through small streams of clear water, through thick forests housing big and small trees that breathe out oxygen.

Arranging for us a place that is conducive for us in every way, food made from soil, the water there to quench our thirst and to serve other purposes

Nature is seen as a caring and protective entity, until when angry and decides to unleash its fury.

When mother nature shows her harsh side and becomes hostile during weather disasters like storms and hurricanes or during natural disasters like earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions; during these periods when all hell is unfolding and there is nowhere for life to hide, nature reminds us, like just every mother that she can get expressively angry and cause destruction. All the elements that were once so beautiful to behold, that once sustained us can turn against us (earth, water, fire, and wind)

When such destruction takes place, and mother nature uses those weapons against us, all human powers and intelligence achieve nothing.

Some believe that Mother Nature gets angry when we don’t clean up the earth after us and that disasters are the aftermath of our irresponsibility in not reversing any harm or pollution, we have caused the earth. Others believe such disasters are just part of a cycle that is forever changing and that it is also a way of healing and changing.

Whatever the reasons for disasters, we should see nature as our source and a guiding force of creation. We should play our part in making mother nature happy by reciprocating her kindness. We should make our environment clean and green through proper disposal of waste and planting more trees by increasing the green areas. We must always remember we are of the earth, we will go back to it, and we will always be a part of it just like those who came before us.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day later this month there is no other period than now to connect to nature and celebrate mother earth as our greatest teacher who has given us life (which is the greatest gift) through those before us, and a place to have our own children.
