Dear Mom, I Don’t Blame You
Dear mom, I have watched your light dim and watched your light fight to shine again. I am proud of the progress you have made and the woman you are fighting to get back to. You selflessly gave up your life to four kids and a husband that was unable to ever reciprocate the love that abundantly exuded from you like a summer sun that just won’t quit. You showed me what it meant to vulnerable, raw, and honest and made sure that despite what dad said, my emotions were real and they were OK to have. Meanwhile you were struggling to feel as though your own feelings were valid. In case no one has told you, your feelings matter, more than you may ever realize.
Hi, So...
Hey Mom. I never told you this before, but I always wished your were my bestfriend. I envy those who can pick up the phone and call their mother and ask for their opinion, ultimately providing guidance and bonding. We don't have that.

There weren't always dragons in the valley, but like I told you in 2013, they had to live somewhere. Where is it, exactly, that you thought dragons lived, or didn't you believe in dragons?

Dear Mom, I wanted to honor you with the Southern Bell send off you desired. A room full of flowers and family all loving you gently while you expired. We did not get that, the absence of it, the harsh way you were pulled from this world initiated my break down. Wishing for a different experience and not able to create it, I began to run again, through all the darkness and the mist, I lost myself, awake in a nightmare, unable to fall asleep and rest.

Dear Mama, I lost your ruby red earrings before you died. I know, I know. You always said I was too clumsy to wear your jewelry, but I couldn’t help myself. It was something about the hold of them, the way I always found every excuse to be closer to you. It was also just the fact that they were bright red and calling to me. I wanted to wear something that stood out, and they were right there.

Thomas EgelhoffPublished 2 years ago in FamiliesThe Grade-School Project Gone Horribly Wrong
Dear Mom, Do you remember back, way back, when I was in sixth grade? Of course you do; you have a memory like a steel trap. It was the class project for Open House, you know, when all the students would put together a presentation, and the parents would walk through the different classrooms and look at what the grades created. Our teacher decided that the sixth grade was going to do a presentation on the major rivers of the world. You remember that teacher, the bimbo blond, the one that gave me the role of “adult movie star” in a murder-solving class play. (That’s a crazy story for another day.) You did not like her one bit and that’s okay; I wasn’t fond of her either. She had her favorites, and I was definitely not one of them.

A Dad Worth Fighting For
My childhood was nothing short of idyllic. I grew up in a nice house with a big driveway that I could ride my bike around, a big backyard where I played soccer with our dog, and a dad that would do anything for my brother and me. Now, it’s our turn to take care of him.
Katherine Carnes ColemanPublished 2 years ago in Families My Mother's Sweet Tooth
I never told my mother that her sweet tooth had set me on a path that would change my life forever. I was in my mid-thirties and still living at home, enjoying all the aspects of a single life. My friends and I would work hard Monday through Friday, go out partying on Friday and Saturday nights, and sleep in on Sundays. I had no real plans for the future; in fact, I thought I had all the time in the world. Boyfriends came and went, but I was not particularly fond of any of them, until I met the man who would become my husband. Initially, though, my attraction to him was lukewarm. He reminded me a lot of my mother, a kind, gentle soul, but not too interesting. He was sweet, let me do all the talking, and liked the home life. A future with him would be like marrying my mother. Maybe I was looking for a little more excitement and not so much stability.
