Infertility

Are treatments worth it?

Infertility... Stillborn... Perinatal loss...

These are words that haunt thousands of women every day. Families struggle with the fact that they cannot conceive a child without the help of over price medication and injections. They go through the ups and downs of the process... pay an arm and leg for the injection, wait the for the exact time to take the injection, mood swings, the anxiety of waiting for the doctor to return to your from your bloodwork, and then the devastating news that it didn't work and you are still without child and need to start the while process over and over again, hoping that this time will work.

Now we know that that's not the case for everyone. MANY women have had success with infertility treatments. Some women may get it on the first try, others it takes five, six or maybe even ten tries. But what about the natural way?

I recently met a family, whom struggled with infertility. They were told by their doctor that they had less then a 5% chance of conceiving a child without the help of medication. Unfortunately they were not financially able to afford medication as it's not covered by their health insurance.

For the sake of the story I will call her Mrs. X.

Mrs. X went through an extreme time of depression. Let's face it, as women once we hit that age range, 27-32, that motherly instinct starts kicking in. We crave that nurturing feeling. We want to kiss those adorable baby toes. Every time Mrs. X would look into a different infertility treatment those dreams seemed to sink further into the dark abyss.

In order to afford these treatments, Mrs. X and her husband would have had to take out a personal loan and even this loan would only only them to have 2 rounds of treatment. Could they have possibly gotten pregnant during those two rounds? Absolutely! But her thought was, what happens if she doesn't? They put themselves in debt, in the chance that they would get pregnant...

After six months of deciding what her next steps would be, they decided to start saving up for an adoption. Even though this road would be a long one and it may even take years to find a child in the system that fits what they are looking for, at least they knew that they would eventually get a child out of the money they were spending.

One year after Mrs X's doctor told her that she had a less then 5% chance of getting pregnant, she woke up not feeling right. Every smell curled her stomach. She had no appetite. She figured her stomach wasn't agreeing with her dinner from last night. But after several days of these symptoms she turned the internet. Everything pointed to pregnancy! She didn't think of that possibility as she wasn't to have children. Nine months later she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Fast forward to today, Mrs. X's family has grown substantially. Her family has now 3 healthy biological children and 1 healthy adopted child. So are these advanced and over priced medical treatments really necessary? Perhaps they are only necessary because we stressed our bodies out to a max about not being able to have children without them. Then we add the stress of how to pay for these treatments. And then the anxiety of if it's going to work or not. Maybe by relaxing and enjoying the activities used to create a baby helped Mrs. X conceive their children, maybe not. But her story and many others like her, make me really think about this.
