I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant Again Until I Was 4 Months Along

Let me tell you a story.

When I was pregnant with my second child, I did not know whether it was possible to get pregnant again so soon after having my first child. In fact, only seven months after giving birth to my first baby, I became pregnant again. The problem was that I did not realize I was pregnant until I was already four months along.

On December 30, 2022, when I found out, I told my husband. He was happy despite how difficult our life was at that time. I had only been in the United States for about a year. I had recently undergone eye surgery, and I had also survived the dangerous journey through the Darién Gap. Becoming pregnant again felt like the worst thing that could happen to me at that moment. I was overwhelmed and discouraged.

The person I was staying with no longer wanted us to live there, so I had to rent an apartment that cost $1,500 per month, not including electricity. My husband was working for a relative’s husband. He would leave for work at 7:00 a.m. and sometimes would not return until midnight or even 1:00 a.m., yet he was paid only $80 per day.

His employer often sent him to make deliveries in other states for that same amount of money. The pay was not even enough to cover our monthly rent. Despite our struggles, my first son brought us joy. Although he was still a baby and had never walked before, he started walking and playing soon after we moved into the new apartment.

When I was nine months pregnant, my husband’s employer called him around 6:00 p.m. after he had already worked an entire day. The employer wanted him to pick up a large machine and make a delivery to New Jersey.

However, my husband had already planned to pick up some furniture for me because we had none in our apartment. I had found someone on Facebook who was giving away several beautiful pieces of furniture, but they had to be picked up that same day.

My husband explained to his employer that he could not make the delivery because he needed to pick up something for his wife. He had already discussed the situation that morning and had even asked for permission to use the truck to collect the furniture.

The employer simply replied, “Okay, bring the truck back.”

My husband returned the truck as requested.

The next day, however, the employer never called him to come to work.

And that was only the beginning of what happened next.

Days passed, and my husband’s employer never called him back to work. At first, we thought there had been some misunderstanding. My husband waited patiently, hoping to hear from him.

After several days without any communication, my husband decided to call the employer himself to ask what was happening. Instead of explaining the situation calmly, the employer became angry and started insulting him over the phone.

My husband is a very kind and respectful person. Even though he was hurt by the way he was being treated, he did not insult the employer back. He simply listened for a moment and then ended the call.

When he told me what had happened, I started crying. We were already struggling financially, and now it seemed that the little stability we had was disappearing. I looked at my husband and said, “Let it go. God is showing us that this is not the path He wants us to follow.”

At that time, our work permits had only recently arrived. We had been excited about finally having the opportunity to build a better future for ourselves and our children. Although we were scared and uncertain, I tried to believe that God had another door waiting to open for us.

We did not know it then, but this difficult moment would soon push us toward an entirely new chapter in our lives.
